Here&#8217;s Reza Salleh, emcee and organizer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed7.jpg\"><br \/>\n<b>Skudap Skudip<\/b>!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed2.jpg\"><br \/>\nSka is all about the upstroke.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed3.jpg\"><br \/>\nA strong groove on the bass.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed4.jpg\"><br \/>\nHorn section!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed5.jpg\"><br \/>\nAnd, of course, that ska drum beat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed6.jpg\"><br \/>\nSaxophone!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed8.jpg\"><br \/>\nTrumpet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed10.jpg\"><br \/>\nBijan Fx, of <b>&#8220;We Are Not&#8221; All-Stars<\/b>, also once a long-running sound engineer for Laundry Bar. He also curated the band list for the night!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed12.jpg\"><br \/>\nSince the crowd starting moving in, I had to move in too. So I switched from my Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA to my Sony Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2.0 ZA SSM because everything was so near.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed11.jpg\"><br \/>\nHis guitar strap came off.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed19.jpg\"><br \/>\nHorn section!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed20.jpg\"><br \/>\nMore close-range stuff.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed18.jpg\"><br \/>\nThe bassist and singer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed13.jpg\"><br \/>\nAt this distance, the 135mm would give this.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed14.jpg\"><br \/>\nI was on the stage, next to the singer. This is what the drummer would look like at that distance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed15.jpg\"><br \/>\nBijan&#8217;s likeness is also the logo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed16.jpg\"><br \/>\nI love the consistency in the ska bands, in terms of dressing.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;We Are Not&quot; All Stars - Time Bomb (Rancid cover)\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AlGORCFV1w4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nThey ended their set, to calls for an encore, so they played a cover of <i>Rancid &#8211; Time Bomb<\/i>. This video should give you an idea how close I was, because the crowd was pushing in.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed17.jpg\"><br \/>\nThe guitarist crowdsurfed! This was a rare occasion in Laundry Bar; it only happens during ska gigs, really, which says so much about the sorry state of the other scenes, to not be able to keep their phones in their pockets and just rock out, like we used to do back in those days.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it was chaotic, but it was also cooperative &#8211; the dudes in front made sure that the crowdsurfers did not land on the band, and they pushed back to give space. The mike would occasionally fall out of the stand, or the stand would fall, and we&#8217;d help to mount the mike back on and get the stand back up.<\/p>\n<p>Or in this case, when the guitarist returned, I helped him find his cable!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed21.jpg\"><br \/>\n<b>Johny Comes Lately<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed22.jpg\"><br \/>\nThe horn section played the <i>Godfather Theme<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed23.jpg\"><br \/>\nSkinheads love ska.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed24.jpg\"><br \/>\nI&#8217;m not even sure if he was part of the band!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed25.jpg\"><br \/>\nWide-angle lenses let you get in their face.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed26.jpg\"><br \/>\nThese guys had a harder sound.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed27.jpg\"><br \/>\nI liked it!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed28.jpg\"><br \/>\nLost the hat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed29.jpg\"><br \/>\nDrummer&#8217;s still got his hat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed30.jpg\"><br \/>\nOh yes!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed31.jpg\"><br \/>\nMy Sony Alpha 99 isn&#8217;t so good when focusing with backlight. Had to take a few shots. Sorry, out-of-focus skinheads!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed32.jpg\"><br \/>\nSo catchy you just have to sing along.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed33.jpg\"><br \/>\nThe bearded skinhead was pulling and releasing the skinhead in white, as if he was tied by a rope. Such fun!<\/p>\n<p>I refer to them as skinheads because they are, with no derogatory notion &#8211; I think they&#8217;re cute that they stick to their guns and go out all in style, not afraid to show their identity, not affected by the hipster thing where you try to look different but end up the same.<\/p>\n<p>There was even a bit where somebody asked, &#8220;eh mana hipster ni?&#8221; and the crowd booed. &#8220;Ada Wak Doyok?&#8221; More boos. He was referring to a well-known Malaysian hipster personality with a distinct handlebar moustache.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed34.jpg\"><br \/>\nThe crowd would just invade the stage. It makes me wonder if the Malaysian music scene would otherwise have this, that they&#8217;d be so outwardly enthusiastic about the music &#8211; we normally just stand back and tell the musicians that they were &#8220;not bad&#8221; even if we were mindblown.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed35.jpg\"><br \/>\nEverybody knows the lyrics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed36.jpg\"><br \/>\nAfter a long break, came <b>Aggrobeats<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed37.jpg\"><br \/>\nThis was a bit less chaotic. There was even a kid with a tablet!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed38.jpg\"><br \/>\nThese guys, I&#8217;d only see at Rock The World.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed39.jpg\"><br \/>\nAnd yet, familiar enough.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed40.jpg\"><br \/>\nInteresting, black bass strings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed41.jpg\"><br \/>\nDavid Gilak, also of They Will Kill Us All.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed42.jpg\"><br \/>\nI was struggling to focus in the ever-changing light.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed43.jpg\"><br \/>\nI think I manually focused this one.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed44.jpg\"><br \/>\nThis, too, for the enraptured skinhead on the right. These guys just bring smiles to my face!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed45.jpg\"><br \/>\nThat way!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed46.jpg\"><br \/>\nLefty Tele.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/msed08.jpg\"><br \/>\nMeanwhile, in the upper area, a group of people obviously not skinheads were toasting.<\/p>\n<p>This post was for a gig 11 days ago, and my next blog post is from exactly a week ago; thus, my backlog for gig posts has hit the 1-week mark.
