He breaks program schedule to show you this cool trick, brought to you with the power of two polarizers in front of a digital camera. In order &#8211; a linear polarizer (must be linear), circular polarizer, digital camera. Yep, my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/?p=490\">circular-linear-wannabe-neutral-density filter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld0.jpg\"><br \/>\n<b>The setting?<\/b> A traditionally scorching bright sunny day, <i>with the absolute EVs scorching at around 15<\/i>. Perfect, they say, for outdoor action photography, as every shot will be scorchingly lit <i>with shutter speeds of about 1\/250 seconds at most<\/i>. <b>The subject?<\/b> A lion dance performance.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I wanted a different effect than to see the lions being immobilized in mid air. I wanted to convey <b>motion<\/b>, something you would not be able to do even at F8.0. Cue the crossed polarizers!<\/p>\n<p><b>Settings?<\/b> ISO 50, aperture priority (anywhere between F2.6 to F8.0) and EV -1. Pardon the composition of the pictures, I was focusing on getting motion in cool ways.<\/p>\n<p>But first, a peek into the mind of a lion:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>This is a regular shot, no movement, no filters:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld6.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>I then attach the filters, and turn the linear polarizer (the outer ring) to reduce the light coming to the lens, letting the camera to choose a slower shutter speed:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld5.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Motion looks better in wide shots.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld3.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>By chance, I got this; one still, the other two moving.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld10.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s how it&#8217;s done!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld11.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Big drums and heavy beats. How could you not headbang to this?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld8.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Nod your head yo.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld4.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Another way to make use of shutter speed is to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/?p=485\">pan with the subject<\/a>, like so: (Note the Queen T-shirt!)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld9.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>A faster-moving panned subject.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld12.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Show&#8217;s over, boys.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/ld7.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Happy Chinese New Year to all of you!
