{"id":721,"date":"2006-09-23T03:58:52","date_gmt":"2006-09-23T03:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/?p=721"},"modified":"2006-09-23T03:58:52","modified_gmt":"2006-09-23T03:58:52","slug":"rainbows-and-polarizers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glaringnotebook.com\/?p=721","title":{"rendered":"Rainbows And Polarizers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Time for some long-procrastinated camera geeking.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/rbp3.jpg\"><br \/>\nSo it was a hot drive down to Ampang, when I tried to capture the light distortion from the sizzling heat by putting a polarizer filter in front of my camera.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/rbp5.jpg\"><br \/>\nAnd whoa, what did I see? Rainbows!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/rbp6.jpg\"><br \/>\nTurns out that sunlight, which then reflects off coated surfaces on a car&#8217;s glass, is polarized&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/rbp1.jpg\"><br \/>\n&#8230;and when it comes through the polarizer filter, some wavelengths are cut off, causing the rainbow effect. However, it varies between car; a Perodua Rusa&#8217;s rainbow patterns are like grilles. This was shot from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smashpop.net\" target=\"_BLANK\">smashpOp<\/a>&#8216;s Proton Gen.2; you can see the coating&#8217;s effect on the sky, but it is most obvious against other cars.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/rbp2.jpg\"><br \/>\nWhat if you don&#8217;t have a coated window? What if you&#8217;re not shooting from inside a vehicle? Simple. Cut a piece of plastic from a plastic microwaveable box and tuck it in front of the polarizer filter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/rbp4.jpg\"><br \/>\nAnd so, you can still shoot rainbows!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/rbp7.jpg\"><br \/>\nYou may think that thick plastic may lower image quality, but it does fine, adding a soft diffuse effect to this picture (no color or levels adjustments made, to show the effect.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.glaringnotebook.com\/zimages\/rbp8.jpg\"><br \/>\nSame goes for this dreamy evening.<\/p>\n<p>An even more interesting idea would be to use a polarizer to shoot real rainbows; the effect of the rainbow might be maximized, or striped, depending on the angle.
