Performing at KL Performing Arts Centre

More from the KL Performing Arts Centre Open Day, 27th January 2008 – this time, performers!

Nick on keyboards with something melancholic.

Amma don’t worry!

Like, whoa.

Tony, singing his gospel.

Otam, the blackest blues cat we could find.

Party in the… studio!

Reading of a play.

Belly dancers!

Through the glass.

How I wish I could belly dance like them…

Peter Hassan Brown of Soft Touch.

Broken Scar on a break.

Markiza of Soft Touch, them peppy hippie folksters. 🙂

Acapella!

Strings!

Kimonos… and headscarves!

Fast forward to Project Bazooka, 17th April 2008. Yes, just 17 hours ago! This is an unnatural skip in the sequence.

Emcee Hayley ponders whether to sing along to shoegazing Witherspoon. They rock, by the way.

Melodic Dreamy Art Rock, they call it.

I’ve seen this guitar somewhere I swear.

Next up – Throne Away with the ever charismatic Emir dancing about.

A shot of Rudy, for the crazed blog readers who want to have his babies.

I love my Vivitar 24mm F2.0 tilt-shift lens. Please pardon the insane bright-line bokeh in some out-of-focus discs, though.

I also love Kelvin White Balance, which gets me these colors out of the camera.

Emir’s on a roll.

I’ve been wasting time inside your hollow head…

I love the random progressive bits and jazzy chords off their new song Goldfinger (Hey Girl)!

Ian Koren has lost that Jesus look, and looks like he did when I first met him like, 6 years ago?

Then there was Couple, one of Rolling Stone’s 25 best bands on Myspace. Hayley looks in admiration.

Check out the shot I got!

Rock and roll, rock and roll, kick some ass before I go!” Great power pop.

Check out my drum sticks, yo.

Rock and roll solo!

Ooo, photographers are cute.

Flipped rightie, strings intact. COOL!

Married Scar-rung!

Kevin a.k.a. Broken Scar at the KL Performing Arts Centre Open Day, 27th January 2008.

Check out his red sunnies! (Shot with the Cosina 70-210mm F2.8-4 at 210mm F7.1; one of the rare occasions where its bokeh turns out nicely.)

Jangan tak rock!

150mm F5.

210mm F5.6 versus…

…50mm F1.4.

Dude, you didn’t tell me that you got married! Congratulations (though I wouldn’t have been able to make it for the Melbourne one hehe.)

Oh well, at least there was a wedding next to the gig that I could crash!

Ooo, who’s getting hitched?

Where’s my date?

Where’s our pianist?

Where’s our bridegroom?

Inside, I spotted a Leica M8 digital rangefinder. Whoa.

White. Sweet.

And don’t go around breaking young boys’ hearts.

What a reception.

I, Me?

How do you tell if an artiste you hear on the radio is a singer-songwriter?

Simple.

They don’t change their name. And for some reason, their name is usually quirky or unconventional.

Jason Mraz, Chental Kreviazuk, Norah Jones, Delta Goodrem, Imogen Heap, KT Tunstall, Colbie Caillat, Alanis Morissette, Ari Hest, Raul Midon.

Some break the mould with the most unimaginative names like Jack Johnson. But don’t you be dissin’ him, he’s got some magic percussion on his fingers yo!

Does it look like any of them changed their names to get on stage? Maybe, if you were Engelbert Humperdinck (that’s not his real name by the way.)

So, when Azrie of Universal Music emailed me and gave me a sampler of Welsh singer-songwriter Aimee Anne Duffy‘s music, I knew I was in for some home-brewed self-written music to sit on an armchair and drink tea to.

Mercy starts off with a raspy black voice. Yes, I like it when my women sound black, yo. This marks her sound, in the key of soul. Rockferry is thematic and dramatic, and yet it pulls a slow pace. This makes an excellent backdrop for a movie, when the female protagonist is running through the streets, discovering her freedom from her chains.

Warwick Avenue has this all-too-familiar vibe. It makes it certain, if she drives the musical direction of the band, who her influences are. It’s all modern heartbroken-girl soul, but one might sense a bit of rock from the roll of the Rolling Stones to a minor tinge of Smashing Pumpkins. Maybe, just maybe. And yet, it all mashes into a pop package.

Serious has that British drawl with a certain seductiveness. Distant Dreamer is encouraging.

Pop soul production is slick, but I could fault the band for sounding too perfect and mechanical. I felt that the band went from one part to another too seamlessly, that you wouldn’t be able to pick out a transition, when sometimes transitions can be the most memorable parts of songs that everybody sings aloud in cars. Like, where are the little drum rolls and guitar licks that are completely legitimate on a real soul record? They are there but are too subtle. Fortunately, Warwick Avenue had a symphonic part which was great.

Okay, so it’s not a full soul record, I only sampled 5 songs, and none of them have that live, jammy feeling that a live band would have when you see band members smiling at each other when they complete a part and add a little riff. Even in Mercy, when she says “break it down!” I don’t feel like they really “broke it down“. It’s like, she has soul, but the band doesn’t.

Does all my nitpicking matter? Not so – if you love one song, you’d love the album.

Mix Chart

Fly FM Campur Chart, 24th January 2008, exactly a month ago. Hooray my gig pictures are not so delayed anymore!

I brought my Vivitar Series 1 28-105mm F2.8-3.8 push-pull and made this! It involves slow shutter speed and a push-pull. Yeah, normal zoom rings won’t get such a smooth action. 😛

Oh yeah, this is Silent Scream.

(Normal shot.) Alternative hard rock for the masses!

Dude you forgot to call me about the pictures!

Ooo, that’s Keng on bass and for some reason he is standing behind the drummer.

Ooo, Cyndi looks angry. And Jiameei looks so cute how can you not want to pinch her cheeks and then put her in your front pocket?

Darino.

Who is hip hop.

Frequency Cannon!

This is Kuachee.

This is Azrul.

This is Yu-Ri.

This is the second guitarist, Siva eh waitaminute where’s Siva?

This is Dino.

They play happy jumpy rock.

So happy, it’s contagious! (I was trying to do an Ozzy Osbourne here.)

And this is the thing I do with my fisheye where I stick the camera in front of people and flash.

Now she gets it!

Jiameei: “I want fisheye too!”

Sure, I did, but I socked her in the jaw before this picture.

Sugar, I Misheard You

I actually wondered what went on in the lyrics of System Of A Down – Sugar, and I found this:

But that’s not the only one!

This makes the second commonly misheard song with the word “sugar“. The other is Fall Out Boy – Sugar, We’re Going Down. 🙂

Project Bazooka, 2008!

The first Project Bazooka of 2008 at Laundry Bar, 17th January, with:

Furniture, shoe-gazing post-rock!

Alang on drums. Tip: Count with the drummer.

Tip: Hide the spotlights.

Work with the light.

Ronnie and his pedals.

And then, inspired by their effect-ful play, I did this in one exposure.

Here’s a hint – Direct Manual Focus on the Sony A700.

The tall-looking emcee, May!

Next up: jazz-funk-rock Seven. That’s Bo with the ‘fro.

Hey man, when will the camera point at me?

Or me? (Yes, drummers get statistically lower pictures of them due to poor lighting.)

Gotta love the A700’s dynamic range, even with Dynamic Range Optimizer turned off.

What I love most about this band is the saxophone, yo.

Deserters! Indie rock.

Zack Yusof.

Random attempt at a Dave Hill featuring Hyo Sun the blur Korean and Sammy (who looks sadder than a plate of bihun on a buffet table).

Lydia has a severe case of table-drumming. Join the Tugu Drum Circle, they meet at Tugu Negara every Sunday, 5:30pm. Listen for the rhythm!

Jan-Juk-Joi-Jup

The first gig I went to in 2008 a certain 3rd of January was Juke Joint Jupiter at Laundry Bar!

First was the Zubira Blues Band.

Featuring Eddy the organizer on vocals and sometimes blues harp.

…and random female fans.

Ito & Malay Blues. This is Ito, an otai (old-timer) with an amazing gravelly deep voice. That’s the same voice you’ll hear in the classic Blues Gang song, Apo Nak Dikato.

Pardon my cryptic sentence – anyway, Ito was from Blues Gang and so was Jim Madasamy on bass!

Edited 11th Feb 2008: This is Wan Ahmad from Sweet Charity. Thanks Eddy for the update!

I don’t recognize the others, though.

Awesome possum!

Aznan Aziz of the Boogie Brothers Band. Superb blues voice, taking from the greats. Hearing him cover blues greats reminded me of Jack White, somewhat, in terms of vocal capability.

This shredder was interesting – his entire left arm would move about in a solid L shape when shredding. That must’ve been what gave him such feel!

This is Sheik. (Thanks cyberdroxxx!) I’ve seen another blues bassist with a Steinberger. Is it in fashion?

Edited 20th February 2008: Lord of Ella & The Boys doing some sweet glass slide guitar. Thanks Zubir A. for the update!

Then, there was Crush.

Super energetic hard-rockin’ singer.

So energetic, I gotta show you a GIF animation.

Shredder with a cool shirt.

Spotted in the back was none other than comedian Harith Iskander!

When they announced that Malaysia’s favorite comedian was coming on stage, I shouted, “Hey wait a minute you’re not Afdlin Shauki!” Heh heh.

Do you all want to hear the blues?

Boy, can he play the blues. There was something about his orgasmic expression that amused me, for some reason.

One more time, a GIF animation (yes I caught a flash!)

Last Gig Of 2007!

It was the No Black Tie Acoustic Countdown one 30th of December 2007.

Otam, who we all think sounds black.

We kid you not the kid has the blues the folk and the gravel-y voice to pull it through. Plus some catchy melodies.

Azmyl Yunor! Good ol’ folk singer with a touch of humor.

Mia Palencia! This lady got a lot of soul.

Paolo Delfino Gomez! Jason Mraz/John Mayer styled songs about the opposite gender. Of course, he doesn’t take upon it too seriously, with some of the funniest lyrics sang that night.

Reza Salleh! Emotional, heartfelt ballads with lush compositions, and modern rock numbers. *

Pete Teo is almost the Man In White. Folk, with a touch of something else. *

Raffique Rashid, yay! Always the one with the funniest stories told in lyrics. He had the most booming, classic, dramatic, macho voice of them all. I don’t quite know how to describe it. *

Shelley Leong! Jazz-tinged musings of life. *

…and, of course, the violent guitar slapper and tapper, Az Samad.

This is the double-tap…

…and another, in double time!

Technical details:

All shots used the Sony Alpha 700 with the Minolta 70-210mm F4 “beercan” lens shot wide open at F4. Yes it’s scorchingly sharp. All shots at ISO1600, except the second animation which mixes two sequences of ISO3200 and ISO6400. Finally, the last animation was entirely in ISO6400.

* pictures marked with an asterisk might’ve been taken by Waifon or Patrick. I’m not sure exactly which but that means my style can rub off on other people wow!

G.I.G.!

Have A Happy M.U.N.D.A.E.*, 10th December 2007, at No Black Tie.

*musically universal non-destructive aerodynamic experience

Reza Salleh explains his existence to two white chicks before the show.

Warren Chan sings soft like a baby.

Shelley Leong being emo on piano.

Paolo Delfino, cynical and lyrical.

Shelley does the double-tapping thing!

Broken Scar returns!

50mm F1.4 at ISO6400 on the Sony A700. ISO6400! The color remains the same!

The superb, amazing, powerful-crooning Najwa! She would blow Alicia Keys out of the water. She made me wish I was a record producer so I’d sign her up on the spot.

Got a light?

Got a tissue?

Got an accompanying guitarist? (For Najwa.)

Kevin’s Geeetar! (Pronounce it like how it is in The Darkness – I Believe In A Thing Called Love at 1:52!)
