McDonald’s Branch Codes

I was having dinner at McDonald’s Tun Perak (popularly known as the Masjid Jamek branch) when I noticed its receipt said #101. 101? What did that mean? Was it the 101th outlet ever to open in Malaysia? Driven by such curiosity, and knowing that McDonald’s Bukit Bintang was the first ever outlet to open in Malaysia, I went down to that outlet after that, to find indeed, that it was #001!

I then set out on a journey to find the branch codes (Jessica Choong says that is what these numbers are called) and see which were the earliest McDonald’s in existence. There was a certain amount of suspense when you go to a really old outlet and discover its number! There was also disappointment with certain outlets, e.g. McDonald’s Bandar Utama Drive-Thru (popularly referred to as McDonald’s Centerpoint), which William Lau thought would be #053 (and I betted #055). I won the bet, with him buying me a cone sundae, because its branch code was in fact #133. We both thought it came soon after McDonald’s 1 Utama (old wing), which was known to be #050 (I later found this to be in fact, #056 – but the 50th in existence; source: http://mcdamansara.blogspot.com/2008/08/badminton-ttdi.html).

My journey was documented with receipts, on my Instagram.

This soon developed into a hobby when I had no better hobbies.

Interestingly, I have been to all the McDonald’s outlets that I went to again to get branch codes – meaning I’d been to a lot of McDonald’s! I intentionally did not contact anybody from McDonald’s to get the full list. That would spoil the fun and sense of adventure!

As for why I’d been to so many McDonald’s, it is not that I am a big fan, but for some reason the people I hang out with tend to prefer McDonald’s for many practical reasons. It is in fact the cheapest place you can have a gathering in an air-conditioned place, in most neighborhoods. Nobody would have any objections to meeting at McDonald’s when you don’t know where to meet, or where to eat. It is a landmark for many people. We’d have our camera meetups (Teh Tarik sessions) at McDonald’s. We tried KFC once, but it was messy trying to have fried chicken and play with cameras at the same time! The fact that KFC was a piss-poor, badly managed fast food chain in general, didn’t help their case – same for A&W. You get a consistently better experience with McDonald’s.

The other interesting thing about the branch codes is that it shows the growth of the middle class – McDonald’s outlets opened in order with the expanding new townships and areas. It didn’t open in high-class areas like Starhill Gallery, and it also closed in areas that were no longer frequented by the middle class (Petaling Street, Citypoint Dayabumi, Hang Kasturi/Central Market). McDonald’s is quite apparently, a middle-class barometer, and an indicator that your area had “made it”.

The element of suspense soon died towards the end of my journey, when I found McDonald’s SS2 – it had a JAKIM Halal certificate on the wall beside the counter, printed large. There it showed #16. More importantly, though, is that I realized I could find all outlets on the Malaysian Halal Directory! There, the full list of existing McDonald’s outlets were, complete with branch codes!

However, the outlets that were then closed were not part of that list, and I had to Google around, finding just a few. Addresses were easy to find, branch codes not at all. Some branch codes were triangulated from https://web.archive.org/web/20120114063410/https://www.mcdonalds.com.my/abtus/corpinfo/milestone.asp for example the Awan Besar/Kesas one.

I noticed that if an outlet moved to a different location it may or may not change branch code (#191, formerly the Mutiara Damansara Drive Thru at Kidzania, is now at The Curve, but Mutiara Damansara Drive Thru got a new branch code.) The original 1 Utama branch #056 moved to the new wing and became #256. Fortunately, the Cold Kiosks and McCafes all share the same branch code as the restaurant they are in – to one weird extent that the Cold Kiosk in Carrefour Subang is #018, just like its parent in Subang Parade, across a road! (The Subang Parade branch also has a Cold Kiosk inside!)

The First 21

From http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=HLJUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=apADAAAAIBAJ&pg=2928,1045656&dq=mcdonalds+taman+tun+dr+ismail&hl=en, it says:

Presently, McDonald’s 21 stores are in Johor (one), Malacca (one), Ipoh (one), Penang (two), Klang (one) and the rest in Klang Valley, the newest being the Ipoh store which opened last Dec 15.

So we know there were 21 outlets as of 19th March 1990, with the latest being Ipoh City, but that was #023, given that #002 Plaza Yow Chuan has moved, and #009/#010/#011/#013? TTDI has closed. After accounting for Johor, Malacca, Ipoh, Penang (both) I don’t know which is the first one in Klang (but it would be #009/#010/#011/#013?) and I don’t know where 3 more outlets in the Klang Valley were.

McDonald’s Bukit Bintang is outlet #001. This was photographed 27th September 2009. This is the Jalan Bukit Bintang/Jalan Sultan Ismail junction, before the MRT construction work. Note the open space on the left, in front of Maybank in the Yayasan Selangor building, where buskers, street performers and skateboarders and the general public could do what they wanted there without having to pay. Note McDonald’s #001 (the first branch, opened 29th April 1982!) and the Giordano signboard above it. It has been a Giordano signboard for ages, but no more. The Quicksilver to the left became an A&W for a short while, and is now a Starbucks, while the shop on the far-left is now a Burger King. You might even spot a short-lived Steven’s Tea Garden (now closed, busted as an MLM) next to KFC!

This was taken at its launch. I am not able to trace the original photographer. It apparently used to be a Lee How Fook restaurant.

McDonald’s The Mall (gone) is outlet #014. I was here a lot after visiting PC Fair or anything in PWTC. Such memories! Here’s a teh tarik session with some photographers.

This is the only picture I have of Mcdonald’s Bangsar Shopping Centre (gone), and sadly, not from the inside.

All that you’ve read above was written in 2013; now fast-forward to 27th April 2022, and I’ve been to every single McDonald’s that is still operating in the state of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur (commonly referred together as the Klang Valley.) I ended my journey in the northernmost McDonald’s in Selangor, McDonald’s Sabak Bernam DT, outlet #344.

Avril Chan, working at Leo Burnett, who services McDonald’s as a client, picked up on my Instagram journey and got her colleagues to contact me. Through them, I found out that the 3rd outlet was McDonald’s Tuanku Abdul Rahman! I did not push them for the first 21, though. This was the only outlet I knew from official channels.

Below is the list of McDonald’s in Malaysia that I could scour from various sources over the years, in Google Sheets. I don’t know branch codes for some outlets that have closed too long ago; the list starts with some mystery outlets where I only have an address but no store name, and I don’t remember how I got those addresses.

Here is the list of McDonald’s in Malaysia! Note that some links there may break as the Internet is not great at keeping links alive across the years that I’ve maintained this list.

I don’t like travelling in general, but if I was in a particular state in Malaysia I’d try to visit the oldest McDonald’s in that state. McDonald’s Holiday Plaza (Johor) #006 and McDonald’s Soon Seng Plaza (Malacca) #012 were in very old buildings which added a feeling of travelling back in time.

Edited 21st May 2022: I found my favorite old McDonald’s, Sri Serdang #145, and notably the most ghetto! This was photographed on the 4th of April 2012, before I even realized there were branch codes. The outlet is two separate shoplots which wrap around behind a staircase; the staircase leads to residential units upstairs.

Separately, I’ve also been to all 7 Taco Bell outlets in Malaysia (they’re all in the Klang Valley so this was easy), as well as the first and only Jollibee in Peninsular Malaysia, in Sunway Pyramid.

In the middle is the first A&W in Malaysia, with KFC #002 to the right, taken 5th June 2013, when this KFC was still operational. Both these outlets have closed down. KFC has store IDs, but it seems to be a running number not exclusive to Malaysia.

1) 79, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, gone
2) 120, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, gone by May 2014 (from Google Street View)
3) PJ State (existing, store ID 1010010)
4) SEA Park (existing, store ID 1010052)
5) Wisma Thrifty, gone

As you can see this makes it difficult to prove that there were no outlets between PJ State and SEA Park, and I have to rely on claims on the Internet:

I’ve also done a list for A&W here:
Amburgers & Wootbeer

I also went to visit legendary old A&Ws and ones that were closing down:
From Seremban To Subang

Edited 24th May 2022: I’ve been interviewed by FreeMalaysiaToday!
Meet the man who has visited every McDonald’s in the Klang Valley

There was also an article on WeirdKaya that quotes the above article.
Think you love Mekdi? Probably not as much as Albert Ng does

Added 20th September 2022:
I appeared on McDonald’s Malaysia’s Instagram stories as a Superfan!

MPew 36

I finally got around to modifying my TakaraTomy Transformers Masterpiece MP-36 Megatron. He has a cannon that has a button that makes sounds. I wanted the trigger to make the sounds, too!

The finished product on one side. The other side has no wire, obviously. I picked this side so that my right hand would partially hide the wire when holding it.

What you need: A switch, a soldering iron and soldering paste, a screwdriver, and a lot of force to open the cannon. I couldn’t figure out how to open it cleanly.

The cannon’s switch is peeking out, with two legs.

The other two legs on the cannon’s switch, when shorted, trigger the sound. So I could just add another switch on this.

This is how the switch goes back in, with my new switch’s wires coming out from the slot in the front. It looks like it was meant to be easy to modify, if you could figure out how to open it properly.

I didn’t manage to figure out how to open it, so I melted off the parts highlighted in red so it could go back in.

A.L.B.E.R.T~albert? a…l…b..e..r..t???
Knew this superb nice guy during my training in Xfresh. First glance…’sombongnyer budak ni’.
At times, you may see him so ‘the blurr’, only then I realise that Albert actually have ‘such an angel looks’. Ahak, don’t be deceived of it. What you see ain’t what u get~He can crap a lot..I mean A LOT. One thing for sure, he is certainly very friendly and hey thanx to you for making me and Orange addicted to ‘nasi goreng cina’ and ‘nasi ayam’.
Even now…we are craving for it!
Hmm..what else? Ahak..he loves local musics especially the ‘rock giler punya’ Back to serious mode, what amazed me the most is that, he is always being himself~way the go

Wish ya all the best and hey there is NO need to write me a testimonial.

This is like an obligatory testimonial, so that I can ask for a simple favour for Mr. Albert.

He looks like rockstar but police thinks otherwise (ahh… you should know). And you should really change your wardrobe colour to bright yellow and bright pink t-shirts. Then, you won’t be associated to BLACK metal. hehehehe…

that was pretty lame… -_-“

Arlyne Kunyir Dec 30, 2005 09:02 AM
Albert??
He is MEAN despite the ‘I-am-sort-of-innocent-looking’ facade and the ‘I-am-trying-to-look-like-a-rockstar-with-my-goate e-and-sideburns’ look. =/
Why do you wonder?
Because he touched AND ruffled THE HEAD and HAIR!!!
And NO ONE gets away with that without a proper WHACK from THE HAND~!!!!!

Oh borrowing sunglasses is a habit hey! wei lucky not fetish! see ya, you don’t need a gf coz you are already a trophy for yourself. I hate this guy coz he can absorb so much info into that MENSA-ed brain of his. Not to mention all those puzzles and analytical stuff he likes… grrr drives me insane coz I don’t wanna mengaku kalah to him, but ALBERTO here is better then stax, ramli burger or any icecream. Miss all the bus ride talks… well Mat Rock.. we’ve gotta catch another Ramli burger sometime soon. Reta Lee Jul 16, 2005 03:46 AM
With one hundred over testimonials, how do I make mine different about you from the rest?
From what I know about you, on that starry, starry night, you were twirling your hair and tweaking my digicam. Oh, what a night! Hehe.
Albert has an interesting persona that could be prod further. Getting into his head would be like trying to solve that Kubik thingy.
Take care and I’ll see you around, hopefully!

Vivien Mah Jun 18, 2005 10:58 PM

ALBERT!! Great guy, interesting sense of humour (anyone who has him on their MSN list would know what I mean). Very, very witty and talented. When they mentioned a “Jack of all trades” they definitely had him in mind. Great friend to have around though we don’t chat as often as I would like. Something tells me it has something to do with me refusing to admit to my identity when we met for the first time. Am I right?

Yes!! I’m a big fan of Albert the man! ALBERT!!! He’s everywhere, he’s behind your door, he’s outside the window, he’s in your car – watch out for this illusive creature, he’s ‘one with the flow’… you’re bound to hop onto his flow.
He’s also an awesome photographer. When I make my first million, i’ll buy you a super camera and hire you as my personal photographer. Hmm.. if ever make that million.

I think Albert was initially scared of me (I still think he’s scared of me) because I took a stalker-ish photo of him when he was at the AXN Anime Festival 2 years ago! Heh heh! After that, met him at a blog gathering, and he said I was action pulak (for a stalker). All in all, I think he is still suspicious of me being his stalker, so I have to remain very inconspicious and not too fan-girly around him. Sigh, I’m sure he has a lot of authentic stalkers though, what with his dashing good looks enhanced by Photoshop. the one who taught me more canggih enhancing techniques)). Everyone says that this guy is a super programmer, but since I never saw evidence of that, I’ll just continue praising his good looks and creative MSN screen names. πŸ™‚ Oh, and it’s always cool to “talk” about bloggers with him. He’s addicted to blog gatherings la. He and Lionel!!

If there’s a person to blame because I have gain weight, it must be you! Always recommending this and that especially when I’m starving. You seem to know when I’m hungry. LOL. And you always message me regarding food at the wrong time, or is it the right time??
He’ll call at an unexpected time and put on the funniest accent which you won’t expect to hear. Always sounding so energetic regardless day or night. Forever so cheerful.
I think he knows every nook and corner in the Klang Valley. Always hearing him wondering here and there. Should seek his advice when searching for a particular hidden lane around town.
Ooo.. and he doesn’t look as innocent as the way he carry himself. I got fooled by his innocent look. Go figure.

There seem to be this gentleness in him i can’t seem to comprehend…dun get me wrong, not the gay sort of gentleness lah! ;P Well, besides the fact tht he is a genious, albert can drink too! I dun mean just soft drink, but alcohol haha Oh and his passion for guitars and music is undescribable. I know this testimonial should be written long time back, but I believe in analyzing you in a long term basis! Hehehee..and yeah..You proved to me that you are a talented, down to earth, witty and playful guy- a real character! This dude used to bully, intimidate and mocked me back in the office most of the time. I guess it’s EQUAL now since that he had been helping me out lately. Unfortunately, he losses most of the time when it comes to the game whereby he is required to stare at me. Maybe it’s just me-lah albertt!*flip my hair*. He has the most “powderful jokes which most of the time I do not understand. Not just me, but..many of us..oppps. Anyways, Albert keep up your good work and remain the humble you all the time. After all, You are not all that mean-lah. Honestly, thank you for everything. xxx, the favour girl :p- to be con’t-

B4 I meet him, they were telling me Bert’s a genius. When I met him, he gives me a funny feeling in my opinion. Aura tells me he’s not just any guy. He seemed self-centered at 1st n I gradually saw his other side. Bert’s a nice friend to share with cuz he keeps your words to himself. But there are some things about Bert I don’t quite understand. Oh, one more thing.. I’ve noticed brainy guys get all the attention from girls but always end up single. LOL!!

Kelvin Soo Jun 29, 2004 07:26 AM

Foong Wai Ng Jun 15, 2004 10:30 AM
imho, albert is super chic. dont be fooled by his petite size, when he opens his mouth… hoiyo, completely eloquent in the queen’s tongue. alberto is witty and sacarstic at times. i have a vague remembrance of him as being a graceful ice skater, almost like a polar bear. great masters of icebergs. the right person to reason out something with. i think he’s genius too. seems intimidating huh? fret not, he’s a social bug.

fiN.twO-FULL T. May 29, 2004 11:18 AM

fiN.twO-FULL T. May 29, 2004 11:05 AM
Alby is my life sized doll, Wish i had a pic of him to put up on my wall. He’s so very the comel, Everyone knows it well. His massages are by far the best! They outrank all the rest. Without fail at three thirty everyday, He travels downstairs all the way. To the cafeteria for his tea break, Nasi lemak and teh tarik. When we chat online sometimes, He amazes me with his wonderful rhymes. Otherwise he just amuses me, With his funny sense of humour plain and simply. He tries to speak like Yoda the guy from star wars, But I’m afraid dear Albert I barely sense within you the force. Im running out of things to say now, Its getting late and I gotta get going anyhow. So to conclude this rhyme, And testimonial at the same time. Albert is a super great friend, Cute, funny, and true to the end =]

Chris Chiam May 26, 2004 09:44 PM
Alberto where’s the metal-o? Met this pint sized yet surprisingly dynamite like dude a couple of times and all i can say is, RESPECK!!!. Knows his music well, which is rock and some metal though i wish he would let loose and listen to some Cannibal Corpse man! And from what i can tell, he’s the reason why we still have Intrakotas and the LRTs not closing shop. Just an ASSumption la. Hehehe. Take care dude!

EVERY ANSWER WILL BE THE SAME!! eg: T-shirt = F-R-E-E!!! and Pants = ALL THE SAME (or at least all about the same from design to colour…we assumed he NEVER wash his pants)!! what the heck is wrong with this dude here….*sighs*

Shannon Me May 13, 2004 02:35 AM
albert is just about as evil as i can be. now that we’re even, i can start on your testimonial. from what i know there’s plenty going on in that brain of his. and i gotta admit that he is kinda cute. sorry i couldn’t have made that anymore less obvious like what you’ve done to mine. it’s not good to point out short people *hint hint* but he’s one smart ass-ed geek. translation: im jealous of how smart he can get. a very good object to roll out of a moving LRT and later to be laugh at. and even if we only met twice… he has hinted on what to get for his birthday (any transfomer will do) πŸ˜‰ but dun count on what he’s gonna get you. it’ll just be another duckie stuff toy… *shakes his hands with my amilase-d hands*

albert is a music geek. a geek as in…he knows what he IS talking about and have his very own opinion on everything. Once you get him attracted to a certain topic, he gets all excited and jumpy about it. and yeah, he SLEEPS in the morning and stays till late. unluckily, the “papparazi” in the tank will caught him and take pictures of him with the “cute” looking socks. and oh yeah, HE’S THE KING OF RUBIC CUBES!sheezs.. i wish i have your brain man ,but seriusly.. albert is also a kind and helpful guy. thanks for helping me around when i’m still new in the tanki ikan and *hint hint*, teach me sum of ur guitar skills lar! ;p (but then again..err..i think i dowan to learn la. bersara d.)

I am like Albert’s official photographer since he seems to like the pics I have taken of him πŸ™‚ but then again I am the paparazzi in da fishtank (beware when u sleep btw!!).. speakin of sleep, he does this alot in the fishtank but only becoz he helps his frends until way into the wee hours of the mornin with their computer and tech probs!

Its a pity friendster limits Testimonials 2 only 1k characters..cuz its definitely not enuf to share wht a wonder this Guy is. He was my scholmate..but i never really knew him back then..then we met again in Astro and worked 2gether on certain project..Ghosh this fella is Genius! One of the most interesting dudes to talk to in real life n online! We always have a good conversation going, and we never run out of interestingly different topics πŸ™‚ He’s such a rockstar wannabe *lol* and he works on his guitar shiet well coz he wants feedback on them, no matter how sucky u or he thinks it is (I give him the American Idol style of criticisms). His obsession with puzzles and codes r insane, and whenever I hang out with him he just seems to be so happy, energetic, enthusiastic, n bouncy! It’s awesome! Yeah Albert is the ever-ready- shoulder-to-cry-on fella because one time he was on the phone consoling a distressed friend for half the day! Ok, that was an exaggeration, but it sure seemed like it, coz i was waiting for him to go into Woh Fatt for ages! But it’s all good. Start taking those driving lessons, coz I know u want to kidnap my electric guitar or flirt with my amp and multi-effects board! *LMAO*

Mr E=mc2. hahaha… Know him since sec school. We were bud mates last time. Sat beside him. He used to be soooo shy that time. But now, wow, a hell of a guy eh. Freakin cool with shades eh. Mr Matrix. He is freakin good in english. Always with his, ‘not never, didnt’. hahaha… One more thing, freakin brilliant in computing. Bloody good programmer. I remember last time he sent me a game that he programmed him self. wow…shocking le. That time still in sec school weh. A good friend to have and to hang out with. A very helpful guy. One of the good memories in my life, BERT. Keep in touch.

Got nothing to do on a Saturday and decided to update this dear friend of mine’s testimonials. Always seem to be the victim of pranks whenever he was asleep…I was grossly outnumbered so forgive me that I couldn’t protect you at the tank, Alby. I would recommend you to buy him gadgets, but we have already planned him a nice, practical gift for this year… Annoying sometimes, but he’s okay… still damn fair no matter how much I advise him to get a tan… Quite antisocial, but then again, so am I… lol… see ya Monday bro.

i don’t know this guy personally. actually, come to think of it, i only know him as THAT Xfresh guy in the forums. THAT dude who works at the fish tank. THAT albert fella. haha. was like, “huh?” when i got the friendster confirmation thing. anyway, Xfresh rocks, which means albert must rock too, but then, there really isn’t a real connection. err. great site, miss it loads, love the new layout thing, but really miss the OLD days. cheers, man.

Jasmine -BN- FeEhiLy Mar 12, 2004 10:50 PM
alright, maybe my first testimonial was kinndaa short. :p didnt know it was so short. so sorry! i’ll make it long this time. i’ve known albert for erm a few years? cant really remember. but yeah, place was at Mid Valley. anyhow, albert’s short (ahah!), fair (omg. i hate you), funny, blur, good looking, popular, admired by everyone (i guess), down to earth, crappy at times, weird, smart, and he’s good at computers. his english is damn good, his patience level is high, his listening skills are amazing, 100% straight forward, nice to be around with, CHILDISH (especially around KJ), and he is nice. amazing guy all round, and you gotta love his sarcasm. most of the time i dont really get it, but you know.. you will once you get used to it. omg. who can forget, a good accent-immitator. all kinds. matsalleh, indian. haha. anyways, long enough ryte? nyek nyek. so, i’ll see you around alright? ciao. πŸ™‚

Note to Albert: THIS WILL BE THE MOST MEANEST AND LONGEST TESTIMONIAL YOU’LL EVER GET coz’ this is revenge! The truth nothing but the truth about Albert Ng! Since, he said he DOESN”T know who is Guy Pearce..and he thinks he looks more like Keanu Reeves (FYI: Keanu reeves used to be a gay~unconfirmed rumour)… He’s a huge fan of Matrix…when I didn’t get the story…He got it and told me how great it was! Getting to know him about quite awhile now is ok la…He is a big time JAKUN. He wows at Streamyx and vanilla coke addict (always aasking me for that Mc’D vouchers) He doesn’t gets sick of thousands and thousands of trips that he makes to Mc’D, when eventually I got hmm…quite sick of it…He likes to comment about my eating habits, which for him is not like a normal person…As I won 15 CDs..and I was kind enough to give him 2/5 out of it.. He gladly lost the Bon Jovi DVD… (u’ll pay for this Albert!) and also the rest of the CDs…aahhh…As I love to piss him of..it proves that Albert could be easily controlled…He also dun seem to play any sports…I wonder y Albert? R u scared of being hitted by a ball…or u r SCARED of the ball?hmm… I dunno why he wants to put on more weight…as he is already looking fleshy… hmm…as I try to crack the case of Albert being thin…(which I’ll nvr will) Albert is a genius who seemed to do badly during exams…which proves not all GENIUSES will do well during EXAMS like ALBERT Einstien, who flunked school passionately, I believe..ohh..which is also another Albert.. Y oh Y, all the Albert’s are so smart? And Albert is white…he might be an ALbino…and sometimes he do look pale and scary… That makes me think y he still disagree with me about LP…He also likes show off with his new pair of FREE Nike’s (I believe that’s the first pair of Nike’s and you should have seen him jakun-ing over it)… Actually, I have a theory that Albert is RICH guy because…he doesn’t spends on clothes at all…because…he gets FREE t-shirts all the time…and now even FREE shoes..oh yeah, forgotten about that RM 1 nasi lemak(he skips lunch and waits till 2pm just for it)…Anyway, he admits he is a geek and this Smart ALbert here who taught me the difference between a geek and a nerd (he even forced me to change it in my previous testimonial, which I deleted)…Well I do have to thank him for that! He has weird love or shall I say obbession with rubik cubes…he twist, turns it but its always easily solved by him…He cracks jokes that I can’t get and pretty lame I shall say…some jokes aren’t MEANT for me I believe…The funny thing is he has prefect vision eventhough staring into hours and hours at monitor…and he looks like panda bear(huge eye bags…u should c it) As he desperately searches for the ONE (which I doubt)…he’s actually nice… He loves Simpsons and lots of ROCK…oh..a loyal LRT passenger..and simple joys of life(according to him) Nasi lemak and teh tarik…aahh…typical Malaysian…Well, I got to admit the fact that he’s SMART and a very brilliant pro- GRAMMAR and proGRAMMER…(yes, Albert..I’m jealous of u) Ah bert, dun forget to cut ur hair ah…too long aleady ah! (trying to impersonate a ‘ah beng’) ANyway, dude U BETTER FIND BACK THOSE CDs or else you’ll pay for it! Note to the readers: By now, I believe you’ll say that I’m a very mean person and my testimonial about Albert..STINKS.. so what?…Albert added it to his page by the way…lol and Albert, I’ll write a meaner one..forgotten something..those ARE NOT HIS shades… ;p

DayanG Aaa Mar 02, 2004 01:58 AM
He’s a PEST!! P-E-S-T! Been pestering me for months and months.. for a testimonial.. *gack(pukes)* Anyways, this guy walks with style.. Golly I mean it. He has this martian-R2D2 kinda walk. I dunno how he does it but its different than normal beins’. Oh yeah.. thanx for da X-games booklet. Yeah.. well if it wasn’t for da booklet, I wouldn’t even write u this! Haha =P. Another thing ’bout this bloke is that he can go way way JAKUN ’bout lil things. I won’t mention what tho’ =P. Did ya know that Alb means a white vestment worn by priests?! Erm… bet ya didn’t know that… aye? Ok ok.. I’m flyin’ off now.. to Neverland. Hasta Luego! Oh yeah.. one more thing.. his words are ironically wounded πŸ˜‰ -n-

Nadia Mishmore Mar 01, 2004 09:41 PM
albert = weird al yankovic. he comes up with the weirdest oddest jokes yet expects ppl to understand them. when i dont laugh at his jokes, he whacks my head. real hard. he’s mean. fortunately underneath all that mean- ness, albert’s a smart ass, hardworking co worker of mine who doesn’t go down for tea(eventhough i can hear his tummy growling all the way from my seat). albert LOVES the one ringgit nasi lemak at the cafeteria, heck he loves it so much, he’d wait for 2 o’clock to have lunch (cause tats when they bring out the nasi lemak). albert has a lot of girl friends too as ive discovered. perhaps its that “im-blur-n-i-come-up-with- lame-jokes” look that gets him lucky. everytime i have an emergency focus group, albert will call EVERY girl he has in his phone book. i thank ya for that alberto. best wishes to u n ur million n one rubik’s cubes, albert. loads of laff.

Zufar Shahren Jan 28, 2004 09:02 AM
Met him in X-Fresh. Definitely found him an easygoing and laid-back person, a friendly guy all the more.
I see that all the ladies are attracted to this magnet, heheh, seriously (they were all over him), and he didn’t really flaunt it. πŸ™‚
I only knew him for a while though, so I can’t really write much about him because most of my comments are from third-person observations…
A nice guy nonetheless, and I think I might have more to say about him soon…

Maya Thiagarajan Jan 20, 2004 08:06 PM
Albs!I finally got down to writing a testimonial(yay for procrastination)So what to say ’bout Albert?Very very funny guy.Great sense of humour.Easy to talk too and looks chun in shades πŸ˜‰

Redzuan Ahmad Redza Jan 19, 2004 06:36 PM
Albert Ng or Ah Bert as I’d like to call him… I would imagine him as the epitome of geek until one day when he put on that wicked pair of shades and lo and behold! It struck a close resemblence of an uber geek right out of The Matrix! His knack for stringing codes on the computer does not hinder his knack for stringing words in the most eloquent manner be it in a poem or those funny lyrics that he comes up with like his idol Weird Al Yankovic. Kicks major asses in any FPS games he plays against you, which makes you feel like wanting to kick HIS ass in person until you actually meet him in person when you feel like kicking YOUR OWN ass for letting such a frail looking dude kick your ass in the first place! Do not be fooled by innocent exterior though, for underneath it all belies the tenacity of a bachelor under reproductive pressure (a.k.a. horny dude wants to get laid).

Hanna Razif Jan 13, 2004 07:03 AM
Albert isn’t fair. Albert’s WHITE.

Aznin Zizal Jan 12, 2004 07:47 PM

Azira-Goddess ChickaWicka Jan 09, 2004 12:07 AM
All right, Alby’s been after my ass rewriting hid testimonials that I screwed up, and yeah… I’m writing a new one dear. Ya happy??? lol. Alby’s a cute, did I say cute urm questionable ^guy^ (lol) who laments about not having a gf and for all I know everyone in Xfresh *wubs* him. It’s that or you’re banned from the website. The fact that he still doesn’t have a gf is probably better described by this example; if he had to choose between willing Liv Tyler herself and the latest Nokia gear, he’d choose the nokia. That’s how he just is (can’t say I don’t approve). He’s willing to listen, willing to knock some sense into my erratic mind, and more than willing to kill me if I did something wrong. He also reminds me of the unpleasant stuff I did, (waaaa…. jahat!). All in all, I wub Alby, cause he’s cute, he’s adorable, and he’s FAIR. I swear he has the FAIREST skin of us all!!!!! He never uses sunblock but he NEVER tans. *sigh*

Carol Yong Jan 04, 2004 02:18 AM
Oh and I forgot to mention he knows this cool music shop that sells second- hand cds and REALLY OLD VINYLS. Like those dinner-plate sized stuff. Old, dingy, weird music, but still a cool place. πŸ˜€ I never saw a vinyl till I went to that shop. Serious.

Carol Yong Jan 04, 2004 01:40 AM
So I actually wrote a testimonial for Albert but friendster ate it up. I don’t like friendster. It ALWAYS eats up my nice nice testimonials. *ahems* So anyways, I met him through Hanna. We were supposed to go out and I was a bit freaked out, to tell you the truth cos I thought he might end up to be some kind of insane psychopath. Blame the newspapers. That’s all you hear about what’s happening in KL. Innocent girls like me being cheated and stuff. Okay enough. So Albert turned out to be nice enough. He actully didn’t mind me dragging him and Hanna into every shop (or something like that) in Times Square, Sungai Wang, an Lot10. So he’s cool πŸ˜€ Uhms he likes vanilla coke and if Burger King introduces Vanilla Coke he will just sit down there all day with his friends and do nothing but eat Burger King stuff and drink Vanilla Coke. (And he’ll probably find himself diabetic the next day :P) And I asked him what Xfresh is about and he kept telling me ‘Music, Food, and *something*’ Anyways I just joined Xfresh and I STILL don’t know what it’s about :/ Yes so that’s Albert. Kind of. I think. RAWKKKKK on. πŸ˜€ Chaos.

Hanna Razif Jan 01, 2004 01:52 AM
Everybody loves Albert. Albert writes poems with simple- dontneedtoopendictionary.comeveryfewlin es-words has tricky meanings. eh wait. Albert doesn’t write poems, he writes riddles to puzzle and deprive people like me from sleep. He also practically knows the whole xfresh forums he knows everyone who says hey to him by their nick. Albert is living proof that don’t need to read books to be a genius. Everything you need to know, is available online. Albert is a cool dude. He lets you use his simcard to play GPRS. p/s dear Albert, GET A TAN. xo.

Edwin Lim Dec 17, 2003 08:35 PM
Yo dude~ here’s nice one for u: Remember the lame club we joined together in high school? haha… yeah, alwys ponteng to C.R. with Mr Lee in it, so no prefect would dare to kacau us~! I still remember u always sit alone at one corner with a 2nd-hand 486 com making some classic games out of Q-basic. Later, u created a network game over the internet and ask me to test it out with u. But the funny thing is: u never won in ur own creation… I wonder why… And about Hacking, I’ve quit the habbit (not :P) So if ever xfresh.com got hack or down one day, I didn’t do it! Just kidding man~

Kah Man Leow Dec 15, 2003 12:33 AM
This guy is probably Albert Einstein’s clone… Mini Einstein? He’s real smart. I wonder how he got 100% for an IQ-like test at Informatics last time. I can’t believe it. Anyway for those of you who know what computer programming is, he was the one that taught me the very basics of Visual Basic. I then self-studied further on this and started making trojan and other evil programs… hehehe… then this guy started to get annoyed with me because I was using my knowledge on making these stuff… LOL. Programming is so fun, isn’t that right Albert?

Ariel Yoong Dec 09, 2003 02:11 AM
UnC AlbY was one sick dude when I first saw him. ( sick as in ill. :D) Thought of him as a quiet, shy and erm…Quiet guy. When I got to know him a lil better, Woah~! He can talk for miles… and he ain’t shy! Muahaha… a very nice guy to hang out with and we seem to have more fun with him around. ^^ Generally, people LOVE Albert~ ( don’t believe me? Look at all his testimonials. *BiG Grin*) FarnY, CuTe ( look at that face of his!) & loved by all… now, isn’t that a great combination? πŸ˜‰
p/s: When are you gonna do a lapdance for us? πŸ˜€

Very nice person. Have to get to know him. You wouldn’t live a complete life not having him lapdance for you. LoLx. A great guy. Friendly ;). Great personality.

Xavy Xaviera Riji Nov 22, 2003 05:20 AM
Albert may look like a serious kind of guy.. but he’s actually quite the opposite. He brings this big mineral bottle everywhere he goes. He’s got good posture too. His movement is quite robotic. Albert’s a great and very knowledgable guy. Must get to know him!

eNg HocK Teh Nov 20, 2003 08:17 AM
Albert seems to be stuck in Xfresh for as long as i can remember. Was there b4 me…was still there when i left..wouldnt surprise me if he works there for life. Heheh…just like the boy who never grows up. If you want to hack into friendster so u can write nice testimonials for yourself, then Albert is the guy to look for. =p

back when we were working together, albert was the only one who could relate to me and my music tastes
he was the one who shared a lot about local music to me. also the one who felt my excitement when i found some real shit in the media library.
thanks for taking care of downloads. working with u was incredible.
music rocks!

alberto!!! i love tiz name…even before i met him!!! he’s actually one of the first i met…in Xfresh!! first person was Fazri actually..cause he’s the person that brought me up to the fish tank!! but tiz guy..not mistakenly…should be the 3rd guy i’ve met in the fishtank itself!! he’s a funny dude…very very very funny!!! he’s in love with metal music..or any music that i would instantly got *blur* huh?? lol..actually..i’m planning to write an essay long testimonial for tiz guy..since i’ve promised him that i would!! haha…but i juz wonder he’ll approve it!!! πŸ˜€ okayz..back to Alberto!!! wat much can i say bout him?? umm..he’s a PURE HARD CORE tech fan…he would be so so so so so glad to even touch and play with any technical stuff…such as PDA and so on!!! he have a very very cute characteristic..and his laugh…sometimes seems fake :D!! haha….but he’s a great advisor when he knows what u’re up to!! he’ll come to u…say a few words and turn back immediately!! he have a very very very high iq :P…u can see him playing with the box thingy that changes the colour (cant remember wat’z its called)…but it’s really really funky!! we used to mix everything up..and he’ll time himself and in an instance he’s done!! he’s a great programmer..and if there’s any problems..juz ask him..and he’s up for the job!! so…umm…tiz is short actually..but i’m kinda worried if he’s gonna delete tiz..so…i better stop here!! but gals…get a chance to know him..he’s cute, adorable and friendly!! willing and ready to mix around with anyone and everyone at anytime of the day or nite :D!!! “A great friend isnt on counted on their attitude…but itz counted on how u treat them…if u cherish them…they would cherish u back :D”

Yvonne Foong Nov 12, 2003 06:02 AM
Albert’s HUMBLE! I mean HUUUUUMBLEEEEE… ok you should get me. Elena says this geek is talkative but he seems quiet to me. But I can tell he’s a kind gentlemen. Very cool techie indeeeeeeeeed…….

Patrick Soo Nov 09, 2003 06:06 AM
Webbie, Rocker and The Rubic Cube Guy are some of the names that would describe Albert. This guy is both wise and patient beyond his years. I still remember the amount of hours I forced him to spend on the phone to teach me ASP and VB Script. He’s good, you got to give him that. But remember when approaching this Albertosaurus… don’t talk to him until he’s had his daily cup of teh-tarik.

Irma Mulyana Nov 06, 2003 05:20 AM
Okay, okay… A long one… Uhm… What can one say about Albert? He’s sweet, he’s smart and he’s really kinda cute… He’s an amazing programmer and if he weren’t around a certain website would fall over itself and die a horrible death… He’s also unselfish and patient and has put up with so much of my shit that it’s amazing he’s still friends with me… So thank you for everything, and we’ve got to go bowling again some day!

Nabz Nasir Nov 06, 2003 04:06 AM
albie!my gf!lol …. hes one cool dude to hang out with … the first time i saw him, thought he was real sweet, trying to make me comfy at the interview …. i didnt get thru the interview … but i got him as a fren, so it didnt really matter ….. hehehe .. albie, ur the best!

Sue Ong Nov 03, 2003 03:45 AM
This is only one of his many testimonials! Albert is a very friendly and down-to-earth guy. He’s fun to be with and he makes you feel as though you’ve known him for ages. He has a unique or rather ‘high’ sense of humour. He cracks me up!! πŸ˜› He’s also helpful and forgiving.. ahem. He’s god of the xfresh forums!!! Bow down to him now. lol I notice that Albert is very observant about his surroundings and the people around him. Maybe this is one of the reasons why he writes good poetry. πŸ™‚

SiZzLiN dIyaNa Ibrahim Nov 02, 2003 05:29 AM
Albert..albert..what can i possibly say about this guy here..He’s the man! hehe..He’s definitely one of the smartest guy i’ve ever known..Petite (for a guy lah) nice and cute too..Very the well mannered wan..Laughs for no reason sometimes..heheh..A great guy i’d say.. πŸ˜‰ But don’t be fooled by his innocent looks..cause he’s definitely not!heh heh..Hope to see u one day..Take care now!

Brian Bobby Oct 31, 2003 11:37 AM
Albert isn’t a geek, he’s THE geek, man. Crazy fella, a virgin to rollercoasters.. Of course, not till he had to go on one with a few of us. Chooses a coaster with 2 corkscrews and a single loop as his first. What a madman. Cool and funny guy, he’ll c++ you to hell. So JAR! JAR! JAR!

Eh, this guy ar. Hehehe.. He’s really a geek man. Hehe.. I know he’s good in comps stuffs, but not too sure which part of it especially. Hehe.. Got to know him better thru comp club in sec scool. But then, we sorta lost touch after SPM.. In my opinion, he was quite a shy guy / introvert. But I think X Fresh made him more open? Hehe.. I’m not too sure. Just my thoughts. U tell me, albert. Hehe.. Oh, and u look more matured now, Albert. Rmmbr KLCC, where we bumped into each other? U look the u I knew from far, but not so when u came closer. From what I rmmbr, he’s also helpful. Overall, he’s a nice young man. =)

Joanne Fong Oct 19, 2003 01:58 PM
Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. The first impression he gives you is that he is shy. DON”T EVER BELIEVE THAT! He’s such a big bully!!! always likes to tickle people!! erm wait.. not people.. ALWAYS like to tickle me and pinch my face! well, Albert is Genius in prgramming, don’t talk much, writes very well and i still think he’s a big bully! πŸ˜›

Alexander Wong Oct 19, 2003 07:44 AM
Albert! A perfect cross between Neo (Matrix) and Fox Mulder (X-Files). A computer whiz that could make up quick programming algorithm in his head as fast as solving a rubic cube in his head. Don’t be fooled by his looks as he has a happening soul inside with addiction to RHCP, Foo Fighters and anything related to stone and rock. He is also a major contributor to Alex’s Prawn & Shrimp Foundation.

his excessively rich command of the english language always gets me looking like this (0_o)… trust this guy to warp my name into a new philosophy which shall take the world by storm. i have been told me o many wonderful things about what can be seen underneath that tshirt of his, still waiting for a chance to see those rippling sinews for myself.

Alright, so he’s another version of your techno-geek. But pay no attention to the usual game…this guy is a genius when it comes to coding and all of it. So he may not be Neo (after all there can only be one One), but as a guy who knows his codes, I’m not surprise if he can program the REAL world to stop bullets at will.
Smart, savvy, cool, calm, sensible and collected. His quiet wit almost always hits the spot. Someone you can count on to get things done just right. He’s one of those people we really need in this world.

Moonshine: Spotlight ft Platform 11, Tempered Mental, Emperor Obvious & Blund / March 2015 Edition

26th March 2015: Moonshine: Spotlight ft Platform 11, Tempered Mental, Emperor Obvious & Blund / March 2015 Edition, at The Bee, Publika!

That’s right boys and girls, Moonshine is back! Albeit not on a monthly basis, and not at the regular spot, Laundry Bar. It has gone from starting at No Black Tie, to Laundry Bar, to this, then Laundry Bar again, and this place again. Here’s Reza Salleh, organizer and emcee, and the one all the bands thank for the longest running music show in the Klang Valley!

First up?

Blund.

They show up at Feedback Open Mic a lot.

This time however, we got to see them play their originals. Pretty catchy and a bit more rocking out! Shot with the Sigma 60mm F2.8 DN on the A7S on forced full-frame mode.

Fariz Salleh handles the merchandise booth. Same combination as above. You can barely notice the vignetting!

My Sony Alpha 7S was having some problems with the rear screen not working, so I borrowed Tang Chun Cheuh’s Sony Alpha 6000 as a backup camera.

Paired with the LA-EA4 adapter and Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA, I got much more close up.

Back to the Sony Alpha 7S for a wider shot, of Emperor Obvious

…and tight drum shots with the APS-C crop of the A6000.

They play a tight mix of what sounds to me like post-hardcore, the kind that I like.

Then, to the next band, who is superb at setting the mood.

The atmospheric Platform 11.

Trance-like.

Smiley Ken Chung!

A mix of Chinese and English lyrics.

Fortunately, I didn’t need to bump up the ISO much, so the A6000 wasn’t too noisy.

This, for example, was at ISO100!

ISO200! At 1/200th of a second, F1.8.

The A7S though does stuff like this, ISO40000…

…or ISO51200.

Final band of the night.

The progressive-ish alternative rock of Tempered Mental!

Jimmy’s drum dynamics!

Jack’s lick of destiny!

Melina’s thumping bass!

Hameer closes the night.

All shots have EXIF included, so you can figure out which is with the A6000 and which with the A7S.

Jalan Yang Diagungkan

So a bunch of roads in Kuala Lumpur got renamed – so there’s at least one road for each Yang di-Pertuan Agong that Malaysia has ever had. I shall shorten the title to Agong and use their common short names where possible.

Although I personally consider it an inconvenience to rename roads, I shall not be seditious.

I shall instead point out the ingeniousness of the roads renamed – to the point that I shall commend DBKL for being consistent in their ingeniousness.

1) Jalan Duta is now Jalan Tunku Abdul Halim, our 5th and 14th Agong. He is our current Agong, and the grand entrance to Istana Negara, is on Jalan Duta. If we find it hard to say the whole name we may abbreviate it to Jalan TAH. I’ll go with Jalan Duo-TAH, because that sounds like Jalan Duta, and Tunku Abdul Halim has been Agong two times. This is consistent with the very ingenious Batu Road becoming Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR). When they say batu, they mean tar. Clever!

2) Jalan Khidmat Usaha is now Jalan Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah. This road is off Jalan Duta and leads to Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur.

https://www.google.com.my/maps/@3.1741838,101.6707276,3a,75y,227.27h,84.18t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s31uu7hiLbbvNnP2x4_dI8g!2e0?hl=en

3) Jalan Khidmat Setia and Jalan Ibadah to Jalan Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin. Jalan Khidmat Setia wraps around the old Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (Inland Revenue Board i.e. tax department). I remember queueing up here during tax-paying month, before they started e-Filing. e-Filing is one of the few government websites that work surprisingly, relatively well!

Jalan Ibadah is the road that connects to Jalan Dutamas 1 from Jalan Khidmat Setia.

4) Jalan Ipoh (from Jalan Pahang to Jalan Segambut part) is now Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. Sultan Azlan Shah, from Perak, was the 9th Agong, and you know how they say Jalan Ipoh leads to Perak? (Well, it doesn’t end in Perak…) So this was kinda ingenious, too. The only problem is that Jalan Ipoh is long enough that they name places along the stretch by what mile they’re on, like Batu 3 Jalan Ipoh. Batu 3 Jalan Ipoh is technically now the end of Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah! So does Batu 5 Jalan Ipoh become Batu 2 Jalan Ipoh?

5) Persiaran Duta is now Persiaran Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin. You’d know this road for Hentian Duta, the big bus stop. You can take the bus to Kuala Perlis – and Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin is from Perlis!

https://www.google.com.my/maps/place/Kuala+Lumpur,+Federal+Territory+of+Kuala+Lumpur/@3.1720078,101.6744973,3a,75y,208.59h,68.28t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s0AvTFjgLr7Zt5V1KevTIGw!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x31cc47a8de3f55f5:0x3cbc4380ae4fd9ba?hl=en

6) Lebuhraya Mahameru is now Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar.

https://www.google.com.my/maps/@3.1481501,101.6812447,3a,75y,320.64h,94.69t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sB6OH9XpSbqTaXLhYc4CB-Q!2e0?hl=en

7) Persiaran Mahameru is now Persiaran Tuanku Ja’afar. This road leads to Carcosa Seri Negara, originally Carcosa, Sir Frank Swettenham’s official residence, and Seri Negara, the Governor’s Residence (official house of the Governor of the Straits Settlement), later becoming King’s House and then Istana Tetamu.

https://www.google.com.my/maps/@3.1462637,101.68021,3a,75y,179.71h,77.12t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sVISAEOzfHGJioEZV62a6Mg!2e0

8) Jalan Semarak is now Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra. This road has Jabatan Ukur Dan Pemetaan Malaysia on it, so I guess they should be on the ball with this, since their road is affected.

https://www.google.com.my/maps/place/Jabatan+Ukur+Dan+Pemetaan+Malaysia/@3.171183,101.7173506,3a,52.5y,118.92h,85.14t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sxr69BMuDyvq7fPq5kkBkog!2e0!4m7!1m4!3m3!1s0x31cc37ef54b9520b:0xf9eafb91b103c8d0!2sJalan+Semarak,+Kuala+Lumpur,+Wilayah+Persekutuan+Kuala+Lumpur!3b1!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x4a80677198e75bfd!6m1!1e1?hl=en

Probably the most ingenious part of this all is the junction where Chow Kit Monorail Station is – it connects Ipoh Road, Pahang Road, Princes Road and Batu Road, but they are now Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Pahang, Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

Here’s a quick Google Maps Engine custom map I made that shows the various roads, covering all Agongs plus some Rajas. You’ll see they connect to each other quite well.

IR; S

4th August 2014: I finally doubled my E-mount body count, by adding the Sony Alpha 7S! I skipped the Alpha 7 because it was merely 24 megapixels – something I’ve had in 3 bodies since 2008 – the Sony Alpha 900, Alpha 77V and Alpha 99V. I also skipped the Alpha 7R because although it had a tempting 36 megapixels, it was missing Electronic First Curtain, important on a full-time live-view camera, because it adds to shutter lag drastically especially when using flash.

The Alpha 7S solved that by not only having Electronic First Curtain, but Electronic Second Curtain (Silent Shutter)! So it is truly silent – some other cameras may claim to have a softer shutter or silent shutter, but you can still hear it. Not this. There is no physical shutter moving when Silent Shutter is enabled. The only sound you’ll hear is if you are shooting an A-mount lens not at its wide open aperture – then you’ll hear the aperture closing down for the picture.

Silent Shutter does have its artifacts though, in the form of stripes when shooting in flourescent light, and one way to solve this is to set your shutter speed to match the frequency of the alternating current e.g. 1/50s or 1/60s depending on where you are. You can’t use Silent Shutter with flash, and because it is not a global shutter, it scans the frame from top to bottom, meaning if you shoot out a car window, you may get scenery that drags across the frame diagonally.

The Alpha 7S also does amazingly at low light. I’ve set Auto ISO to max out at ISO 409600, letting the camera decide when it needs to go that far. Strangely, that hasn’t happened much, even though I’m now on Manual Exposure, 1/160s and shooting whichever lens wide open for the foreground/background separation.

Here, though, is 1/160s ISO20000 at F5.6. I don’t have to worry about shallow depth of field in street photos!

Auto ISO chose ISO80000.

F2.8 1/100s. Auto ISO chose ISO128000. I’m hoping to get in a taxi with the classic flowery wallpaper patterns of my childhood taxis.

F2.8 1/125s. Auto ISO chose ISO204800. Yup, frozen people on the dance floor.

1/15s. Auto ISO chose ISO409600. I turned off all the lights. It was nighttime, and I could not see anything. I turned on the camera, and I was surprised to see it seeing in the dark. It had night vision!

The stuff that came in the box. Lots of cables, and the battery charger!

I also bought the Sony LA-EA4 A-mount to E-mount adapter. This is the fourth such adapter; what’s the difference?

LA-EA1 – APS-C only, no translucent mirror, contrast-detect autofocus with SSM and SAM lenses, manual focus with screw-drive lenses
LA-EA2 – APS-C only, translucent mirror, phase-detect autofocus with SSM lenses, SAM lenses and screw-drive lenses
LA-EA3 – full-frame, no translucent mirror, contrast-detect autofocus with SSM and SAM lenses, manual focus with screw-drive lenses
LA-EA4 – full-frame, translucent mirror, phase-detect autofocus with SSM lenses, SAM lenses and screw-drive lenses

I also removed the rear baffle from my Sony E 16mm F2.8 pancake lens (left) and Sony LA-EA1 (right), making both full-frame compatible.

However, the 16mm has a bit of vignetting left, and distortion beyond the APS-C frame is weird, but it’s not too bad – it can look rather interesting!

If I wanted a proper wide-angle, I still have my Sony Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2.0 ZA SSM (on the right, on the LA-EA4, on the Alpha 7S). The Sony Alpha NEX-5 is on the left. Both these setups give the same angle of view.

Here’s a full full-frame family picture. Clockwise from top-left: Minolta Dynax 7, Sony Alpha 900, Sony Alpha 7S with LA-EA4, Sony Alpha 99V.

Same as above, but adding the Sony Alpha NEX-5 with LA-EA1 adapter and Sony VG-C99AM to the Alpha 99V.

You might have noticed a new lens in the first picture. Yup, the most affordable, high-quality Mitakon/ZhongYi Speedmaster 50mm F0.95! They changed name from Mitakon to ZhongYi. Got this on the 15th of August 2014.

It comes in a very classy looking box.

The lens itself is classy, a heavy chunk of metal and glass, with a moderately tight focus ring and a clickless aperture ring, suited for video because it makes no sound. A drawback though is that you may accidentally move away from F0.95 unintentionally!

There is a Pro version coming later, but I was told by the seller that this batch already had the new coating.

Now, a full E-mount family portrait!

On the right is the Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM on the LA-EA4 on the Sony Alpha NEX-5. You can see it’s just as long as the Sony Alpha 7S with the Mitakon/ZhongYi Speedmaster 50mm F0.95.

All my mountable 50mm lenses! Left to right: Seagull 50mm F1.8 for Minolta SR mount; Minolta 50mm F1.4 Original; Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM; Mitakon/ZhongYi Speedmaster 50mm F0.95.

Clockwise from rear left: Sony Alpha 900 with Minolta 50mm F1.4 Original; Sony Alpha 99V with Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM; Minolta X300 with Seagull 50mm F1.8; Sony Alpha 7S with Mitakon/ZhongYi Speedmaster 50mm F0.95. All having the same angle of view!

Yup, this kind of angle of view. F0.95, 1/160s, ISO10000, by the only camera setup from above that can do this.

20th August 2014: Oh, and lastly, my Sony Alpha NEX-5 sensor looks a bit different now. Can you guess why?

It was out of warranty, so I took it apart, and tore off the infrared blocking filter. Yeah, I didn’t do a good job of it…

…nor did I assemble it back correctly. These are the leftover parts! I’m told though that the spacers should be removed to keep infinity focus. The excess screws probably were meant to be at the second stage, after removing the outer shell.

I’ve now doubled my infrared camera count. Above is my infrared-modded manual-focus Fujifilm Digital Q1, with a superglued-on filter thread that allows for SLR lenses to be screwed on by a rear lens cap (with cutout) that has a UV filter superglued on its back – making it a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera way before the Panasonic DMC-G1 debuted. Yes, it could take different mounts, with the right rear lens cap!

The small lens is from a manual-focus webcam; it’s an 8mm F3.5, making for 35mm equivalent on full-frame; thus the crop factor was 4.375x.

So how is the Mitakon/ZhongYi Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 on infrared? It has a visible hotspot on the middle.

Can get rather hazy.

These were all mixed color shots – I didn’t think of bringing a filter that blocks visible light and allows infrared only to pass.

Now, with the Sony E 16mm F2.8 pancake.

Again, with flash, and a Hoya R72 infrared filter. I’ve shot Adam of Dragon Red before in infrared on my infrared-modded manual-focus Fujifilm Digital Q1!

Jyo through the Mitakon/ZhongYi Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 through a 77mm infrared filter, handheld (as opposed to screwed-on, as I didn’t have the right step-up ring.)

Camera Geek Throwback

Now, for something different – a geekout post! These are pictures from way back, to sometime April 2014.

So I got myself the Sony Alpha 99V, on the 23rd of October 2012. I also got the Sony VG-C99AM vertical control grip; as you can see it duplicates the joystick and all the buttons needed for portrait shooting. It also is the first vertical grip that isn’t a smokestack design, meaning it is not L-shaped and is easier to stash away in your camera bag.

I also got myself the Sony HVL-F60M (seen on the right). The Sony Alpha 900 is on the left, with the Sony HVL-F58AM on it. You can also see the front of the VG-C99AM, where the lower shutter button is really ergonomic and gives a lower center of gravity when you hold it.

Note that the HVL-F60M is using the new Multi Interface hotshoe. The HVL-F58AM however uses the old Auto-lock iISO Alpha hotshoe. There are a few flashes that come in various mounts:

– HVL-F43AM, HVL-F43M
– HVL-F20AM, HVL-F20M, HVL-F20S

So be sure you know which one you’re getting. AM means Auto-lock iISO, while M means Multi Interface. S is the Smart Accessory Terminal, found on the older NEX series cameras.

The HVL-F60M also comes with a LED video light on the flash head, making it handy for video. It also comes with a free warming filter. The HVL-F43M also has a LED video light, but it’s on the flash body, so it doesn’t rotate with the flash head and cannot be used to bounce against anything, so I didn’t get that. Plus I rarely use flash these days.

Left to right: HVL-56AM, HVL-F43AM, HVL-F58AM, HVL-F60M.

Left to right, the evolution of flash pouches: HVL-F56AM, HVL-F43AM, HVL-F58AM, HVL-F60M.

Note that the HVL-F60M now comes with a diffuser and ADP-AMA hotshoe adapter, that fits in the side pouch. Neat!

Left to right:
Octopus DM-6 (Sony Auto-lock iISO flash on ISO camera body)
Sony ADP-MAA (comes with Alpha 99, for Sony Auto-lock iISO flash on Multi Interface or ISO camera bodies)
– Seagull SC-5 (ISO flash to Sony Auto-lock iISO camera body)
– Sony ADP-AMA (comes with HVL-F60M, for Multi Interface or ISO flash to Sony Auto-lock iISO camera body)

Left: Sony A900 with ADP-AMA to ADP-MAA to HVL-F58AM. Right: Sony A99V with ADP-MAA to ADP-AMA to HVL-F60M.

Interestingly, you can stack the ADP-AMA and ADP-MAA either way and the flash’s wireless ratio controller still works. So it can be said that all functionality is transferred.

While the Multi-Interface hotshoe fixes the problem of dirty contacts causing full-power flash firing, it isn’t that well-designed; my HVL-F60M flash foot broke while it was in its pouch. I don’t know why it has that notch. Fortunately it was fixed under warranty for free.

Meanwhile, back to the Alpha 99V; what happens if you put a lens with a shorter flange distance, such as the Sony E 16mm F2.8 pancake, in front of it?

As with any other lens moved forward from its normal position for infinity focus, it focuses closer. In this case, it became a super macro.

A while back, I rented my lenses out to Khai, who used them on set for Take Me To Dinner. Awesome noir movie about a bunch of assassins. The soundtrack by David Knight is superb, too – you can download it for free, but I decided to buy it.

Anyway, this is the Sony NEX-FS100P. The lenses you’ll see in the movie are my Sony Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2.0 SSM ZA, Samyang 35mm F1.4 UMC, Opteka 85mm F1.4, and Sony 135mm F2.8/T4.5 Smooth Transition Focus.

The 135mm F2.8/T4.5 Smooth Transition Focus has unique bokeh, like no other lens.

Another shot from that lens. Yes, that’s a Sony Alpha 99V on a remote-controlled helicopter!

The view from above. This was at Studio Zaloon, Pudu Plaza, a hotbed for all things Sony Alpha, thanks to the support of the boss, an affable Mr. Chin.

Meanwhile, another hotbed of photography is The Centre For Asian Photographers, in The School, Jaya One. I am convinced that Szetoo’s drawing of the cat with glasses is her bespectacled husband…

…George Wong, on the left. Here he is, interviewing Ming Thein on the 18th of January 2014.

I also met Raja Indra Putra (RIPI), who brought this Kickstarter-funded Petzval 85mm F2.2 lens.

The week after, I was there again for a good ol’ Sony Alpha TT session. Here’s Szetoo through Michael Chee’s Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens. I knew her from way back on Xfresh, while I met George first at KL Tower for the launch of the Sony Alpha 100.

Left: Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Art on the Sony Alpha 99V, right: Sony 35mm F1.4G on another Sony Alpha 99V.

A mint Minolta 200mm F2.8G HS APO with its beautiful white paint intact! I had a paint-chipped copy of this lens in my custody for a while; it was Ted Adnan’s.

Interesting podium in The School.

Now, fast-forward to modern white lenses – the great Sony 500mm F4.0G SSM!

It did not come with on-lens stabilization, but that’s the thing about the Alpha mount – the sensor moves instead. Longer focal lengths means the sensor moves more. Once in a while, after a long time, the sensor stabilization fails, and the camera owner sends it for repair, and gets the broken sensor stabilization unit together with the camera with new sensor stabilization unit inside. This is what it looks like; it normally slides freely and bounces about, but this one was stiff.

And now, for a lens that doesn’t need stabilization – the Peleng 8mm F3.5 M42 circular fisheye on the left, next to a Lomography Fisheye Baby 110.

Left: Samyang 8mm F2.8 UMC fisheye for E mount, right: Samyang 8mm F3.5 for A mount. Both cover APS-C format only. Great for the E-mount cameras, of course.

Here’s the Carl Zeiss Biogon T* 35mm F2.0 ZM through an M-mount to E-mount adapter, on my Sony Alpha NEX-5.

Joseph, through the Samyang 24mm F1.4 on my Alpha 900.

The Leica M9 with the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm F0.95 ASPH E60. I tried this lens on the Leica M6 TTL I had in custody for a while.

Now, for a throwback to the 26th of July 2012, for the Sony RX-100 hands-on. This is Zhi Shan through my 135mm F2.8/T4.5 Smooth Transition Focus.

This is through the RX-100 and its amazing Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 10.4-37.1mm F1.8-4.9 lens.

Another shot from the same camera.

Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival 2013 at the Midvalley Exhibition Center.

31st July 2013: My latest A-mount lens purchase, the Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM.

Arlyne, volunteer subject, at F1.4 through the Sony Alpha 99V.

We’d go out to the low-lit park to get test shots, to find her giving directions to Japanese tourists.

Left to right then top to bottom: Peleng 8mm F3.5 M42 circular fisheye, Vivitar 24mm F2.0 OM-mount, Sony Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2.0 ZA SSM, Samyang 35mm F1.4 ED AS UMC, Minolta 50mm F1.4 Original, Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM, Opteka 85mm F1.4, Sony 135mm F2.8/T4.5 Smooth Transition Focus, Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA.

There’s more to come, of course; I’ve just bought an awesome lens and camera, but that will come later. This is a savepoint!

Feedback Open Mic ft Ida Mariana & Quirky Qwerty @ The Bee Publika / June 2014 Edition

24th June 2014: Feedback Open Mic ft Ida Mariana & Quirky Qwerty @ The Bee Publika / June 2014 Edition. Here’s emcee and organizer Reza Salleh introducing Flip The Table. Check out that nifty Traveler Escape headless guitar!

Triblues. Three dudes playing the blues.

He sings Pink Floyd – Money and Wolfmother – Dimension!

Solid solos. The theme for the night was Singing The Blues – you don’t have to follow the theme, but the one who follows it best, and stays to the end when the results are announced, wins a prize.

I bumped into Robin Wong and Jackie Loi there (I’ve linked to their pictures from this same night), both fans of the Micro Four-Thirds camera system.

Above is my Sony Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2.0 ZA SSM next to a Panasonic Leica 25mm F1.4. My Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm F1.4 ZA SSM is the same size as my 24mm, so it gives you a good idea my full-frame lenses scale to Micro Four-Thirds lenses. (Of course, my Minolta 50mm F1.4 Original, with a 49mm filter thread, is closer to the same size as the Panasonic, but its optical quality is probably nowhere near when shot wide open compared to my Carl Zeiss.)

Below is my Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA next to the Olympus 75mm f1.8. Ironically, the Olympus gives a bit more reach!

And now, for the homecoming Ariff AB.

Sharon Chong chilling on the sofa.

Ewaz? I didn’t get his name.

Awesome, awesome singing and loops and ambient wizardry.

Towards the end he suddenly brought this out!

Black & White.

She sang Elton John – Your Song while he sang Jimi Hendrix – Hey Joe. Yup, Hey Joe, a classic blues song.

Saturday Afternoon.

Danish & Natalie with a cover of John Mayer – Slow Dancing In A Burning Room.

Instrumental progressive rock band Black Lightbulb! Raja Farouque on millions of notes.

Simmy, on millions of notes, too.

Zaim keeping it cool. Interesting that the number of knobs matches the number of strings.

Ash on the beat.

Melinya.

You’d normally see her on the other end of The Bee, at the sound engineer’s console.

Ida Mariana, first featured act.

She was backed by the legendary Wan Gigi of Alcentric and John Thomas And The Phunk Mob Experience.

Quirky Qwerty, second featured act.

One interesting cover was that of Herbie Hancock – Watermelon Man.

So yeah.

They normally dress up as a polka band, but in conjunction with World Cup they wore jerseys instead.

Lukarts.

Disco rock!

Calico.

Chairs crowning the table.

Fish De La Musique 2014

21st June 2014: Here’s the last from the series of Fete De La Musique Malaysia 2014 pictures, except that none of these pictures have to do with musicians performing music.

Instead, here are musicians and their best friends! I think I removed barrel distortion by pulling a slider in DxO Optics Pro to 100.

My Peleng 8mm F3.5 circular fisheye, at F3.5, doesn’t let in a lot of light in a place without a lot of light. This was one reason I didn’t bring it out for many years.

This causes some slow shutter speeds to be used, unfortunately.

DxO Optics Pro has this slider to remove Fisheye distortion. Here’s what it looks like all the way to 100.

Another defished picture – though you can still see the fisheye effect, unless you double-defish. A single-defish makes for a good crop, like this picture and the first.

Jia Wen discovers that I am indeed fishy.

She then discovers that she, too, is a fish.

She thinks the fisheye will look good in her belly.

A circular fisheye, as opposed to a diagonal fisheye, has a circular image and covers 180 degrees from opposite ends of the circle. (A diagonal fisheye covers 180 degrees from opposite corners.) This makes the circular fisheye have a wider angle of view, but is much harder to compose without getting everything in. Thus the usual shots are either from the top facing down… (and spot Jia Wen unhappy that she is not eating my fisheye…)

…and facing up.

It cries to be in the center of the action. The nearer an object is, the larger it appears.

Highso

I finally got to get my hands on with the Sony Alpha 7s. My only concern was how it would fare versus my Alpha 99; how much better would it be at high ISO?

For the A99 I usually comfortably shoot up to ISO6400. I wanted to see what that would be for the A7s.

The A99 had the Sony Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2.0 ZA SSM, while the A7s had the Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4.0 ZA OSS in E-mount. Both cameras were placed on approximately the same location on a raised wall with approximately the same framing, manual focus, F11 and exposure compensated with increasing ISO, by selecting a faster shutter speed. Unfortunately, I did not bring a flash, so I’d be subject to the flickering of the flourescent lighting, hence the inconsistent exposure and white balance (the brown tint being the ambient light while the green tint being flourescent.)

All pictures were processed in Adobe Camera Raw 8.5 with the “Previous Conversion” option selected. Everything was flat at 0. The A99 picture was downsampled using Bicubic Automatic to match the output resolution of the A7s. After flattening, the collage below was sharpened with 33% 22 pixel 4 threshold if I remember, and then 200% 0.3 pixel 1 threshold. These are all 100% crops (except the A99 crop – that would be a 70.66% crop.)

Because of the variance in flourescent lighting, it’s hard to truly say, but I’d say what was ISO6400 on the A99 looks like somewhere between ISO25600 and ISO51200 on the A7s. Still, much better than I expected, seeing that DxO seemed to think it was only 1 stop in ISO difference. I thought the A7s would only be worth it, if it could pull 2-3 stops above the A99, if I was to get the LA-EA4 adapter, that would take away under a stop of light. As for why I’d want to put A-mount lenses – there is no equivalent to the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA or Sony Carl Zeiss Planar T* 85mm F1.4 ZA on E-mount, unfortunately, and I would not be able to crop as much from say the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA on a mere 12-megapixel A7s.

I was also largely uninterested in the A7 because it was merely 24 megapixels, and I had 24 megapixels since the A900 so this brought nothing new; the A7r meanwhile had 36 megapixels, quite exciting, but it lacked the Electronic First Curtain shutter that the A7 and A99 had, so it had a shutter lag that would not work for action and flash photography. The A7s is better, by having Electronic First Curtain and Electronic Second Curtain so it’s completely silent. In the menu however it’s called Silent Shooting.
