April Updates

Thousand and two apologies for the lack of updates; things happen, like:

Albert rediscovers the Dvorak layout.

I did that to a spare keyboard lying in the office. I noticed that my productivity decreased greatly and I was even more less (more less?) likely to load MSN or reply emails in standard Albert-ic bombastic English. Hic.

I am somewhat glad that when I type on my home’s QWERTY keyboard, I type D instead of E. A sign that I’m getting used to Dvorak! Interestingly, I type words that start with S with O instead, and mash up E and O often. I still have not gotten used to locating the rarer keys.

Then when I get home I’ve a project to work on so yeah, no blog updates. 😛

Beatallica

That’s right kids; this is the band that does Beatles songs Metallica style. They play Metallica excellently; they’ve got the guitar tone, the And Justice For All era James Hetfield growl, everything… but throw in what The Beatles do (unconventional harmonies and chord progressions) and a rock and roll beat, and you get an entertaining (and funny) result. Yes there are places you can download the songs.

Sepet

I borrowed Jason‘s original Sepet VCD. My mom the usual tearjerker-movie-sucker… didn’t cry. Neither did I. I thought it was alright though; the sound was alright despite reading complaints about that. I know someone so much like Orked in mannerism (and she’s even cute like her) and yet, I did not know if I could place her character in Ipoh. Then again, I don’t know Ipoh. Her family is urban in thought but it seems the rest of town isn’t. Some people criticize the movie for being inconsistent in the potrayal of the community, but we forget that there are urbanite bigots.

And now, on to time-based narration:

On Friday I met up with YK to buy more and more Transformers.

Treadshot seriously has style.

Planes in scale. Yes, this was Photoshopped and the planes are swapped. Standing from left: Skydive (Generation 2 recolor Aerialbot), Strafe (Generation 2 Cyberjet) and Treadshot (Transformers Energon Aerialbot).

We then headed to Bintang Walk to meet Syefri and Frus. Frus and I headed to The Loft, Zouk again to catch Twilight Action Girl. This time, we stayed for the dance floor.

It’s a bad thing when you don’t think that beer tastes bad anymore.

Perhaps I missed the chance to ask them to play something from the black album before they changed to early industrial and then something which was more techno than rock. “Is it too late to play any song from the Spinal Tap album?” “Oh chill lah, we’re changing back to rock now.

When they played Gimme Some Money, a herd of rockers left. 🙁 How can they not know Spinal Tap?!? At least there were some who appreciated the song’s poke at The Beatles’ enlightenment era. 🙂

I also bumped into Iszie, who bugged me to come the gig she was emceeing the next day. Yes you will notice that I am now talking about the next day. Yes I am using present tense which is so grammatically wrong.

Amantle The Sea. Yes! For this blog entry I shall have a theme for all gig-related pictures; they will all be taken without flash, preferably in red, and without any levels or color correction, to celebrate the beauty of a ISO400, EV -1 manual setting.

Lucy In The Loo rocked. No that’s not Lucy, and yes, I cheated by sticking on the stickers from a picture taken with flash.

Citizens Of Ice-cream was cool. Heavy soundscapes and no vocals can only come from a combination of two Chinese indie bands. They even get different colored lighting for their Floyd-ish escapes! On the right was what seemed to be a tape loop.

The Times brought their scene with them; Roots And Boots members were seen moshing frantically. The vocalist had this Britrock stance which was cool.

Telebury finished the gig. Yes again I cheated on the right-side picture, using flash to bring out the nice blue Gibson Les Paul. I mean, have you ever seen one of those in Metallic Blue?

Longdrawn 3 was the name of the gig, with the biggest turnout I had ever seen in The New Paul’s Place.

Okay I’m hungry. Let’s take a break and stare at the new KFC curry chicken. It has the zing of their Tom Yam experiment, but without the Tom Yam flavor. May this gimmick last longer.

Now teleport back to Paul’s Place, this time on a Wednesday, for Troubadours, the biggest singer-songwriter bigshot gig I’d ever seen. Pictured is a floating magnetic toy; a little invention by Paul (who used to design exhibits for the National Science Center!)

Ronnie Khoo was first, with some mellow-dy.

Izzy and guitarist Jeremy.

Warren Chan and Abigail. He had some interesting chords over more mellow stuff. Who from KLue doesn’t sing in falsetto all the time?

Ariff Akhir and Shahril the bassist. Now Ariff’s got the voice and the chords, but Shahril marginally draws more attention with his extremely fluid walking (and perhaps playing a game of Twister) basslines.

Peter Hassan Brown and Shahril the bassist.

Opie from Indonesia. She had soul, yo. It manifested in her diva-like vocals. And hey, that guitar is way too familiar.

Meor from Central Market. His aggressively-strummed blues were fun to watch.

Kartini which I suspect is also from Indonesia.

Kelvin from Singapore. Superb stuff; he shredded the blues to the intermission music. (Other bands would play the tuning song.) He then made a song on the spot about this here country. I have never seen a guy sing with more conviction; he strains, beats and dries the words that he sings.

Reza Salleh the heart-melter crooned over jazz guitar.

Sadly, I did not get to see Ben of Ben’s B***hes or Azmyl Yunor play as I had to leave. They would have been interesting.

In other news, Ed has lost it again; this time he has a 48-hour blogathon. So? 49 48 51 45, I say to him. 🙂

Metal Matters

William and I caught Latte@8 at Sunway Pyramid’s Starbucks last Thursday.

We were pleasantly surprised to find one of the guests as Sharifah Amani, co-star of the acclaimed-by-everybody except-me-because nobody-is-able to-watch-it-with-me Sepet.

Frequency Cannon. (That’s who I was here to see.) You don’t see it, but Yuri seems to have contracted Siva’s detaching-guitar-strap syndrome!

So I may have bumped into Becky, a famous blogger, and not had the guts to say hi and make the world a better place by letting a famous blogger know that yes, a famous blogger can be recognized just like any other form of celebrity should.

I honestly like the Proton Gen 2 design (and most of the colors!) I think it’s sleek. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, someone adds to it!

I bought this second-hand from DJCS. On the left, a Sparkle GeForce 6600 GT (500/900) 128MB AGP card; on the right, my old Powercolor Radeon 9600 Pro (200/400) 128MB AGP card. The Radeon 9600 Pro would replace the GeForce 2 MX I bought from Syefri on the Athlon XP 1800+ machine; the GeForce 6600 GT would sit in my Barton XP 2600+ baby. Rates? Here goes techie numbers quick: UT2004 Flyby, 165 fps; botmatch 57 fps; Doom 3 High Quality 67.6 fps; Quake 3 Max Quality 228 fps; 3D Mark 2005 3185 marks; 3D Mark 2003 7089 marks; 3D Mark 2001 13043 marks. Quick go out and buy lottery numbers. Yeah 3D Mark 2001 was disappointing; 13043 marks was something a Radeon 9700 could do! However, its performance in 3D Mark 2003 was leaps better than my Radeon’s 2589 marks.

Heavy metal guy would consider this torture. Heavy metal runs in my veins, baby! It makes for my magnetic personality!

Presenting the new Calzone, from Pizza Hut – pizza on the go. A regular-sized pizza folded into a handy taco shape. Pizza Hut is under the same stingy company that hold Ayamas Roasters and KFC, but they do not suffer from food miniaturization! Shown is a AA battery in scale. No I do not eat batteries. I am not a robot. Do not eat batteries, even if you think you are a robot. Batteries will corrode your tin can soul.

Speaking of robots, here the Autobots gang up on a Decepticon I couldn’t resist getting as it was fresh on the shelves.

Barricade, the center piece of the Transformers Energon series combiner Bruticus Maximus poses, terrified.

He is an excellent, well-articulated tribute to Onslaught (that Transformers Generation 2 yellow dude), original center piece of Bruticus.

I misplaced Onslaught’s original cannon accessory.

No, Barricade isn’t that short when his cannons are folded out.

He is also the same size as the powerlinking Transformer Energon series. Spot the Decepticon!

Here is the armless, legless wonder of the 20th century!
As center pieces, Onslaught and Barricade are vital. You just can’t buy the arms and legs and superglue them together.

Barricade makes a pretty totem pole.

Barricade is really my new favorite Transformer Energon figure. He’s not limited in articulation in any way compared to other Energon figures which had niggling features like legs that can’t bend at the waist, or shoulders that can’t extend… Barricade also has a solid look and feel, and every joint and flap locks into place. RAWR.

Trapped In A Box

The theme for today’s picture blog is Trapped In A Box.

Friday, 4th March

An innocuous Japanese stuffed toy shows where he needs his Tee-Pee.

Saturday, 5th March

The fishtank, also known as the Xfresh Headquarters, undergoes renovation. We vacate the place and stick an “Out To Lunch” sign. My idea. 🙂

This was my desktop.

We moved to the small conference room upstairs. Major fire hazard. At least we are warm and cosy inside, with the heat of monitors to keep us from cryogenic preservation.

The cameraman makes a cameo.

Sunday, 6th March

My old strings were rusting, so I got yet another Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky set. Yeah those that have the smooth bending light .009 strings and have three heavier ones from the .046 end. But hey, check out the light that shines through, under the bridge.

I went freeloading at Fitness First, Wisma Consplant with Leech.

“Er, I’m here for my free trial.”
“Who referred you?”
“Some guy named Aaron… he said he’d call back on Friday to confirm but he didn’t.”
“Oh he’s not in today so why don’t you just come in? Here’s your visitor pass. Feel free to explore the facilities.”

And so, I walked in with no identification whatsoever.

I tried the treadmill, finding 5 kilometers per hour to be a drag. 10 was proper haste, while 14 was a good run. I stepped aside to the side to max out the speed and see how fast it could go, when a guy tapped me on my shoulder… shocking me.

I thought it was a guard about to tell me off. “Oi jangan main main niii… nanti jatuh baru tau…

It was Yit Weng, thankfully. We then met up with Leech for Body Combat class, a class of uncoordinated men and women kicking and punching air. It also featured the fat screeching voice dude with a top that exposed his unsightly belly. I say top and not shirt because it was feminine. Well, at least you know that after a while, these people will look better, right?

Leech: “My friend says he’s been here a while, and they’ve only seen him get fatter.

I looked at Leech, and she was flushed red. She looked at me and said I didn’t sweat. Which really, was because of a loose shirt that fooled everyone! On a side note, I think I sweat less than the average guy and thus do not stink when I’m overnighting. Yes girls that means you can bring me home.

I then went into the sauna with the only guy I knew was straight – Yit Weng. Just in case. Even if he wasn’t well we’d be too embarrassed to face each other in the office, yes? I only felt the heat on my nose. I didn’t feel as sweaty as the other dudes looked, but a touch of myself (er… I mean, I touched myself… er, I mean, I felt my hand) proved that I was indeed damp. We sat a full ten minutes and I came out unsatisfied. Is that what you call hot? My mom’s Perodua Rusa is almost as hot inside, with the engine being in the middle and all. The only sign that I’d been in a sauna was that my lips were very salty.

So Leech and I went for an un-hot flaming hot peri-peri at Nando’s for a long chat that will remain undisclosed. Timely indeed that Hanna and Nabila would call and land in Subang Parade themselves, where I took this picture of a lamppost near Secret Recipe (ISO settings 50; it’s not as dark):

An ATM machine runs on Windows 2000 and has a corrupted file.

Monday, 7th March

This was what was left of the server room behind the Xfresh Headquarters. The racks have since been cleared off, leaving a nice security-camera-less room to chill in.

The floor panels can be opened! How cool is that? It would make a nice place to stash your weed.

Shaz and I went to watch Hitch. Major inspirational movie. Anyway he forgot to look up an exit in the One Utama parking lot!

We reversed, drove around to find a guard to open it, and found this poor sod trying his luck. No sir it does not have an automatic sensor. A guard finally opened it for both cars. 🙂

Tuesday, 8th March

Aini Nadia, beloved Xfresh Street Surfer, gets trapped in the back of the Xfresh Street Surfers Proton Arena… with the keys.

Um gee, how do we open this? Clockwise or anti-clockwise?

Freedom!

Wednesday, 9th March

I did it again. I bought another car.

An all-American Corvette Z06. In blue.

With red leather seats.

The Transformer Alternator, Autobot Tracks, looks sleek but his legs aren’t as poseable as Meister‘s.

Look who’s the poser now.

Thursday, 10th March

Shisha! Ask me for videos of me playing the malfunctioning robot. We were at bird-shit-land Rasta’s in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, smoking up what was still legal and apparently not proven unhealthy yet.

Saturday, 12th March

Well I’ll be. Something smaller than a Reduced Size Multimedia Card. The TransFlash, a wee 64 Megabyte midget that fit in Jerry‘s Motorola E398. Obviously my RS-MMC wasn’t in the picture as it was in the camera taking this picture, yes?

More Than Meets The Eye

The Sony Ericsson k700i is the new Sony Ericsson T610. The same crowd bought it.

GSC Cinemas open in Berjaya Times Square! There, at the third floor.

I am now the proud owner of a Mazda RX-8.

Gotta love the mesmerizing taillights.

Okay, so it’s a left-hand drive but heck, I got it cheap.

Oh, and it’s small for a Transformer Alternator.

Of course, considering that the Rubik Cube it sat on is the biggest, at over 150% of an originally-sized cube, it isn’t that small after all. From left: Corinne got me this early birthday present; the normal-sized cube, the 133% sized cube, and the 150% super-sized one.

What a poser. I mean, literally, with superb articulation and detail.

Meister, really, is Jazz in a rebranded disguise.

This, an 8-in-1 card reader, and the excellent Power Of Soul: A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix have satiated my purchasing tendencies for this month, I hope.

Rock And Relax

It is with great sadness that I close the offer to sell my legendary Fujifilm A202 digicam. Anyway, here goes some random pictures with my new camera:

Help me, I’ve got Transformer acquisition syndrome.

No my favorite high-class roadside mamak (Steak N Goreng next to BB Plaza) is gone! (Or they’ve just been goreng-ed.)

Saturday the 22nd

National Treasure was cool. Nicholas Cage carries his classic accidental hero look. He doesn’t even need an eleven to get uh, an undisclosed amount of treasure.

The young balloon slowly rises to the top, and it shall join its trapped brethren.

I finally checked out Dide’s crib. Look ma, no mosquitos!

There is just something so pretty about these colors.

Sunday the 23rd

Rock Dawg Music Fest at Paul’s New Place (I prefer to call it that) had some interesting things, like Triple6Poser’s new lineup. Ed the drummer did hard rock vocals way better than Khai’s punk-stained vocals. However, the new drummer Alex didn’t do a drum solo.

Justin Guber has a shiny new toy.

I discovered that setting my camera to ISO 400 looked pretty with the lights. From top left, left to right then down: The Blumps, Seven, John’s Mistress, Tempered Mental, Fatal Tragedy and Triple6Poser.

I think this public telephone booth was set up not to shade the caller from the sun, but from the menace of bird poo. Somehow, Bangkok Bank and Central Market is the center of bus public transportation as well as domestic avian flights.

In other news:

I don’t usually do this (promote gigs) because of that uncertainty of going (though I usually end up going) and sounding like a hypocrite. Heck.

Where: The Disco (above Liquid) at the back of Central Market
When: Saturday 29th January 2005, 5pm to 9pm
Who: Republic Of Brickfields, Ziel, Brainhead, Zero Gravity, Indka, Insulyna, nightshift
How much: Pre-sale RM15, at the door RM18

I’ll uh, update my links soon. Promise!

Hor Hor Hor

I read on MusicCanteen about a Christmas Eve gig in Plaza Mont Kiara at the office. Too bad then, that I had to meet up with family for church.

They picked me up at an LRT station, and we headed to the crowded roads near the church to park. My sister was sick, so the following conversation ensued:

Mom: Are you sure you’re up to going to church?
Sis: Yeah, I can still go…
Mom: (Looking at normally empty roads full of parked cars) Are you sure? You can’t be sick for Christmas!
Sis: Yeah, still can go…

We didn’t go in the end. Deep down, I knew my sister wanted to go for some innate reason. I didn’t say anything to influence the decision, so I was glad when my mom so happened to take the Hartamas route back home. I asked to be dropped off, and I strolled into McDonalds.

I bumped into the marketing dude of a big, big company. DJCS knows him. He asked what I was there for; I told him about MusicCanteen, gesturing to the soundcheck. He typed out an email on his laptop to various people, asking them to check out the site.

What a flukeful stroke of luck, if I should next see their logo there among the list of sponsors for an event. It would be somewhat thanks to me!

So there was Frequency Cannon, Edge Of Fire, Nitrus, TragicComedy (with cool Hendrix licks), One Buck Short (featuring Zack of Cosmic Funk Express), Flatline, Naked Breed, and…

Estranged.

Featuring Alda (the original bassist) on bass and Mooky (of One Buck Short) on vocals.

As if that wasn’t enough, Adam (of Dragon Red) took to vocals after that, for a furious Velocity.

Another surprise was Dragon Red; during Fade Away, Adam guided Amil down the stairs of the stage, where he did his solo in the moshpit.

It was then that Debbie and I realized he was a bit too far from his amplifier!

Righto. Wireless. The way it was revealed (with Amil walking far out) was major coolness.

As for those who worried about the rock quotient, well most bands didn’t even play Christmas songs, unless they were featured in MusicCanteen’s Christmas compilation.

And now, for something outside depressing chronological order.

I finally have something new for my Quotes page:
If you’re the only one left, you’re always right!

I went to The Curve in Mutiara Damansara. Scenic indeed it was, as this was a scene out of a mafia crimelord’s mansion:

Oh and Merry (belated) Christmas! Note the merged cube (an article describing how to do it yourself will come).

Robosexual

This post is dedicated to YK and Tech, and to my Transformer-collecting, Transformer-modelling past.

Reunited at last, in the Transformers Energon series (remember them in the Transformers movie?)

Yes, so I was feeling impulsive and bought the Powerlinx Rodimus. He was worth it because he could merge with other Powerlinx series Transformers. What a coincidence, then, that he would complete Arcee (were Transformers couples? Watch the movie!) I bought Arcee a while back because Patrick said it was a collector’s item.

Yep, this would make the second Transformer I’d ever bought with my own money. When you’re earning, you tend to think, “Should I buy this cool toy, or should I buy a DVD writer to backup my stuff?

Picks Of The Days

Monday

I went to work, then to Bintang Walk, to Bentley. I saw the Ibanez GSA 370-QM I so longed for since before I first failed subjects in college. I extolled the priceworthy features of the yummilicious butterscotch guitar to MW, going “lookatit! It’s got double-locking floating bridge, H/S/H pickup configuration, super fast action, jumbo frets and 24 frets… eh waitaminute. (Counts dot inlays) 15, 17, 19, 21… 22… 22! 22? 22 frets?

Disappointed that my dream (affordable) guitar had 22 and not 24 frets, I shook MW hard. At the shoulders. In a way, her reverbrating scream said all I wanted to say.

Tuesday
I surprisingly still remembered how to drive around the driving school circuit. I bummed around with the Uptown Girl at, you guessed it, Uptown. Disappointed that SLC the big corner guitar store was emptied out, I bought picks from Harmony Music.

The 0.96 pick was not only thick, it was huge! (As you can see it’s wider than the nut.) The finger pick was too soft for my liking.

I got on the bus, and it took me to One Utama, where I saw something that old buddy Patrick Soo had been telling me was a rarity:

This would be the first Transformer I’d ever bought with my own money. I later hopped to Davina’s office, while I toyed with Arcee. (What’s wrong with toying with a toy huh?) It felt like I was half my age, she was twice her age, and I was waiting for my mommy (who just bought me a new toy) to finish work.

Wednesday
I hauled my 19″ monitor to a computer shop a few blocks away from home, gaining stretch marks on my right arm, hence my MSN nickname “nineteen inches and my right arm hurts“.

And now, for more food updates:

In a little quaint residential area of Taman Sri Sinar, Segambut, lies a recent discovery. Along the row that had the only KFC, was a 7 Eleven that was not open… and a mamak next to it, to my pleasant surprise, serving cheese naan!

What is with my fixation with cheese naan? Perhaps I have been slow to catch the trend, but I only knew of it last year. It would quickly gain commercial appeal among even hardened fast food junkies like me, as it wasn’t oily like the roti canai variants, instead having a crusty, plain texture, with cheese melted upon it. Much like pizza.

This one was nice; it came with fish curry, dhall curry and some unidentifiable, funky-tasting sauce. I asked for condensed milk, and asked my brother (who ordered cheese naan after me) to dip his cheese naan in condensed milk, and then in the fish curry. (I thought condensed milk and fish curry made a heavenly marriage.) He said it tasted like santan.

Santan! Ah, it all made sense now. Santan would be curry with milk, and this was a cool accidental discovery. Plus, you could control your curry-to-milk ratio.

Other good news:

The STAR LRT now is fully Touch N Go compliant. One less stored-value ticket to carry. 🙂

The Midvalley KTM Komuter station is now open, but KL Sentral’s ticket booths have stickers with the old map, without Midvalley on it. It does however cost RM1. Taking the Triton bus from there would cost 50 sen.
