Apartment Acoustics

Rewind to Moonshine: A Homemade Acoustic Show, 21st February 2009, in The Apartment Downtown, KLCC! Here’s Isaac Entry with some blinkers on.

He got the gritty juke joint blues.

Paolo Delfino, long time no see!

He is joined by Ian Foo.

Ian brought a whistle which makes more than whistling sounds. I don’t know where I’ve heard this effect before but it’s very cartoony!

Erin the attention-paying audience member.

Meanwhile, behind the stage, sat a big crowd of Nuffnang members and staff, in apparently an important meeting. I had never seen a blogger meet, so quiet!

Sadly, after that, they spread out and starting camwhoring. I tried to usher the crowd away from standing right behind the performers! Now this might’ve been okay if it was an electric, loud gig, but this was a passionate acoustic gig where people play delicate songs…

…for example, Paolo was playing an acoustic, passionate version of Britney Spears – Womanizer.

Spotted: Big White Guy and Skinny Leather-Pants-Wearing Girl.

Yes, she likes to overtake heads in pictures. I remember when she was still at Blogspot and LiveJournal!

Fast-forward to Moonshine: A Homemade Acoustic Show, 19th April 2009, with the funky soulful fresh Zalila Lee.

I would’ve loved to see her perform again with Nisha Tham… but that was an unforgettable performance I haven’t blogged about yet. That night however she did a cover of James Morrison – You Make It Real (not as cool as the other cover she did with Nisha…)

Najwa, prancing her fingers on the keyboard doing soul. She also did a little cover of Lady Gaga – Poker Face!

Her brother Farhan joins her for a little melody and to play the rap-o-phile.

Diptych.

Sarah F., gig regular for as long as she’d been in Malaysia, and her Coke bottle. Happy travelling, and avoid the flu!

Over at the bar.

It seems that this particular table tends to seat loud crowds – these ladies were laughing loudly throughout most of the performance!

Two Bars

17th February 2009 – Broken Scar, at Groove Junction! But first, here’s brother Darren as An Honest Mistake. Really, literally, he is brother to Kevin Teh, frontman and Broken Scar represent.

Finally, I got to see the Chad Blondel (and Ben) who had been in my Facebook inviting me to gigs across the seas.

Then comes the rockstar! You know they’re rockstars when they have guitar picks adorning the mike stand.

Kevin makes his best Ozzy Osbourne impersonation.

Alex Ang always makes an Ozzy Osbourne impersonation. Kidding!

Alda is resident bassman for the Malaysian lineup of Broken Scar.

Rohnie Tan and Ywenna add some flavor to Broken Scar’s rocking mix.

Paul did a bluesy intro to Shooting Star. Whatever happened to Qings & Kueens, his other hard-rocking band, I wonder?

Kevin is, as always, doing the Yngwie guitar-swing-around-body thing.

The crowd is amused.

Hot chick photographers!

Sorry Kevin, your guitar doesn’t shoot spaceship-destroying lasers like Dave Mustaine’s does.

Ywenna shows us who the boss is.

Fast forward to two days later, at Cloth And Clef, for Feedback: Open Mike a particular Thursday 19th February 2009.

There was a rather empty crowd, but Greg Ramanado still rocked like he was in the company of millions.

And that is exactly how he will later, rock in the company of millions.

Gotta dig his inflections that day – I think he was groovin’ Jamaican or country but not quite. Everything he sang had a twang in it.

The cool Justin Wong.

So cool, the usual standing tiger smiles, and Sarah Fathallah sings along.

Organizer Reza Salleh then went up for a bar or two, with some covers, which he’d rarely perform (no more Stan Bush – The Touch?)

And of course, the bartender stood by.

Rhymenosaurus

Ever noticed that rappers don’t ever, ever sing? It’s like a major Doo Not.

So today I discovered a rapper who does sing! *

That’s Neneh Cherry – Buffalo Stance. Wow, rap, soul and new wave all in one! Why have I not discovered her earlier?

I think it’s funny how often, a certain song that doesn’t fit the usual genre of an artiste, makes you appreciate other artistes. Faith No More – Stripsearch, for example, is a brooding electronic piece – because I liked it, I enjoyed Neneh Cherry – Manchild!

That’s not to say that it would be uncharacteristic of Faith No More to have schizophrenic genres… their cover of Black Sabbath – War Pigs is what got me hooked onto Ozzy’s classic lineup at first. Sorry Dio, you know I went to see you in Singapore, but I still prefer the croaking geezer. No, not Geezer Butler though I did see him too!

I didn’t get Auburn‘s music at first, but after a few times it got in my randomizer, I got it, and enjoyed it! Just recently I discovered Silverchair and realized the resemblance. If I didn’t like Auburn I probably wouldn’t have liked Silverchair. I couldn’t rock to Love Me Butch‘s This Is The New Pop album at first, but a few listens to Funeral For A Friend and then I understood.

* Okay so technically Hunny Madu sings and raps too. Hello if you are reading this see I remember yo multi-colored friend!

Clubbed While Clubbing

Last Friday 15th May 2009, I went to TAG presents: Sounds Of The Universe: A Depeche Mode Black Celebration at Barsonic, Zouk KL. Who knew that I would get clubbed when clubbing?

I was in the middle of the dance floor, 16th May 2009 around 2 AM, when something or someone delivered a sharp blow to the right of my face, near my eye. I went, “wow what a blow!” and I turned to my right only to see a skinny-elbowed friend of mine. I thought she was overly excited about the song that just came on or something.

By reflex, I covered my head with my hand and it felt warm. I looked at my hand and there was warm blood all over it! I was bleeding profusely! So I ran to the toilet (scaring Clara on the way there) and looked in the mirror. Shit, the right side of my face was covered in blood.

The janitor there was very helpful to get tissue and apply pressure, and a random white guy brought me ice. Thanks random white guy! Thanks janitor dude!

The blood dripped down onto my shirt and inside it. Oh no there goes my nice shirt!

Many who came in went “whoa! What happened?

And then came in this other dude in the picture, who says he was facing a wall when something/someone hit him! He thinks very strongly that it is not an accident and says whoever did this will get it.

So after a while of applying pressure, the bleeding reduced from soaking the entire tissue, to just leaving ‘marks’ of red. I then headed the hell out of that place (with Petrina documenting this.)

I found my friend who I last saw in the general direction of the blow; she said that she was sure she didn’t elbow anybody. I don’t know why I thought it could’ve been her elbow (as later examination of the wound would show, it certainly could not be a sharp elbow.)

The friend she was dancing with, told me that he got hit in the groin, so he thinks somebody in the crowd was very violent.

The bouncers outside had no bandages either. I later saw the other guy who got hit, and he was explaining the situation to a bouncer. The bouncer asked if he was going back in, and he said yes. They positioned a security officer at his table to watch out and look over the crowd. I don’t know if anybody was ever caught.

A while later, a guy came running out of Zouk, jumping over the railing, somersaulting and landing on the cigarette counter with his legs crashing forward into it. He then ran to the valet parking area where security officers caught him, and a guy was pointing at him. The suspect was bleeding at the forehead. I asked another onlooker where this guy was from, and he said Zouk.

Meanwhile, at the cigarette counter, a cigarette promoter girl was sitting on a chair, crying. The other promoters were standing in a circle around her while a few guys were trying to comfort her. I think the suspect could’ve landed on her or something, but it happened too fast for me to see.

So that was freaky, 3 people bled that night!

Still holding a tissue to my wound, I walked to the convenience store near Public Bank near KLCC. Got myself 2 bandages (one for each) but the guy helped me bandage and he decided that one would be enough to cover both. Took a cab home, bathed and shampooed (I hate the cigarette smell on my hair) and called my favorite St. John’s alumni, Wai Fon. She asked if I got the bandage wet – if it was moist it could lead to infection. So I peeled it off.

The upper gash is 2cm long and 2mm wide; the lower gash is also 2cm long and 2mm wide. Interestingly, there is also another mark behind it. I cannot figure out what could leave such a mark! I am however infinitely grateful that it didn’t get my eye and I can still see with both eyes! Likewise for the other guy who got hit. Still, bloody freaky that there are people out there doing this, whether intentionally or not! Please, dance responsibly! Take off any sharp accessories or bling that could bloody cut bloody wounds in people’s faces alright?

And if it is intentional… show yourself, chicken. If you want to teach me a lesson, let me know what it is first because I don’t even know what me or the other guy did!

Later I noticed that my right arm had a mark, possibly a follow-through from whatever it is that cut me. It didn’t feel like a sharp cutting motion, but more like an elbow or fist, oddly.

I had pretty much cleaned up all traces of blood except this spot under my watch. Also note the cigarette burn on my watch.

My shirt, argh! This is the right half. Doesn’t look like a lot here but now I know what amount of blood would come out for such a wound.

The next day, I went to the clinic when it opened. The doctor insisted I get 3 stitches. While I did get local anesthetia, it certainly was not reassuring that you could slightly feel him tugging at the skin. It was a rather long process, and I could hear him saying to his assistant, “potong ini. Bukan. Ini. Potong. Bukan. Bawah sini. Bukan.” I was lying on my left, and as he operated the blood trickled from the wound down past my eyes! His assistant had to swab it. Obviously, I closed my eyes and tried to be as calm as possible.

The lower gash had already dried so he could not do anything about it. So this is what I look like now; I think the yellow makes it look far more dramatic.

I am very thankful that all my life I’ve had a low accident and wound rate… I am usually in places which have a higher risk e.g. moshpits, front of stages (I got hit in the back of my head once by some drunken skinhead’s steel-toe boot as he was crowd surfing, no blood thank goodness, but it was a sign to get out.) I walk in seedy and dingy areas. So far I’ve been alright, and I find it funny that this should happen when I decided to come to Twilight Action Girl, in Barsonic, in Zouk for the very first time since they renovated. (I went for their “last” TAG night back in The Loft upstairs in Zouk, and was a regular back in 2004-2005. Ah, good old un-violent indie dance days.)

I also understand now why you always see medics and ambulances at big concerts. You guys are brave, keep it up! I’d hate to see people come to you, bleeding like mad.

P.S. to my skinny elbowed friend, I’m sorry I ever suspected it was your elbow!

P.P.S. Oh and when I got there at midnight, Panda Head Curry just finished their Depeche Mode acoustic tribute set, which I regret missing! They played like 2-3 Depeche Mode classics and never played anything from Depeche Mode after that. Kinda regret staying for that, then. I am a fan of Depeche Mode enough, to try to make an acoustic version of Martyr. Their stuff makes excellent emo, you know?

Monochromatic Sonic Debris

Moonshine: A Homemade Music Show at Laundry Bar, 12th February 2009, this time in monochrome! Here is the excellent Shahrider and Nizam P. They played my favorite Sighyoung (back when Shahrider went by the name Sherry) and the very fun Babi song!

Nizam P. has all the percussion below his waist. He even sits on a kajon!

Sundae, a lighter, poppier band.

When was the last time you saw one of these?

Wow I have two drumsticks now!

Yet another band slut. Happens to the best bassists. But he might not be one by the very sole reason that he does not have the bass-player’s belly. N. Rama Lohan, if you’re reading this, feed him more beer!

Strings.

She sings.

Gotta love them red Ibanez Artcores!

Azmyl Yunor, you know, started with his classic folk about sitting on the highway…

..playin’ his blues harp…

…and then he turned punk!

Yes, like totally jumpy and rock and roll and shouting punk choruses!

When did our favorite 3-chord folk rocker turn into this?

This isn’t the Azmyl we know, right?

I wonder how many in the audience were his students, having a new impression of their beloved Mr. Azmyl.

That said, he totally rocked out in a way that blew everybody’s mind. I’ll have what he’s having!

But of course, it had to come to an end.

Then it was the grunge boys of Stonebay.

3-uh…

I quite like how I handled the highlights and shadows in all the pictures. What do you think?

Taking Some Time Out

Timeout KL’s On The Up, 21st January 2009 at No Black Tie, with George Wong of TwoStoreyHeart!

Unsuspecting Omar in yet another unsuspecting moment. 135mm F1.8 ISO6400 1/25s.

Kevin of Broken Scar with a ex-presidential expression.

Gotta dig the hair!

I stared at the stairs and got Intan. 135mm F1.8 ISO6400 1/4s.

Wow, I can get a hairlight even on an unlit stairway. 135mm F1.8 ISO6400 1/5s.

Rohnie Tan loves the smell of a Sennheiser Evolution hehe.

Broken Scar is one of those few bands where I get to see Paul Chuah do some serious shredding. Well besides Qings And Kueens but I haven’t seen them around in ages!

Kevin does a South Park character.

Izzy Mohd the serious singer songwriter, who is really not all that serious in real life. I remember realizing that her vocals are very dominant in her songs, much more than most performers, and that is a good thing.

I often subconsciously tune out to lyrics and don’t realize what people are singing about. Oh yeah nice riffs and chord progressions, I’d say.

Red beam of death.

Secret Love Affair does funky, very funky indie!

Feedback Open Mike

One 10th January 2009 night ago at Cloth & Clef!

Stonebay, one of the headliners.

Choon How uses his Nintendo DS to provide background electronic music – cool idea!

Dude, you were raw and grungy. Definitely a powerful f-all set.

Fans.

The crowd.

Anuar, rippin’ it out on lap steel guitar. We don’t ever get to see this around Malaysia much!

This was Az Samad’s nephew Afiq (thanks Uncle Az for the info!) He ripped out some groovy, killer thrash metal riffs. I had not heard anything so fresh in quite a while.

Then of course, it was Az Samad‘s turn to impress by turning every crevice of his guitar into a sound-making instrument, banging on the wood and tapping the surfaces.

There was no space to slap guitar body on the Soloette.

Davina came on to sing a song, or two.

She did a cover of Bachelor Girl – Buses And Trains.

And then there was a far more emotional song, Carole King – It’s Too Late. (Thanks Davina for the info!)

Uh, did I just croak like a Kermit?

She rebounds from slips quickly and cutely with a smile!

A video by William here.

Then Melina (and Stephanie not seen in this picture) are in yet another band…

Hamster DamnAged! A Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover band.

Featuring a sexy, dancy vocalist with all the shouts of shrieks of Karen O!

Here’s a video of them performing on Youtube.

A softer change of pace with Rusdi.

Brainhead.

The stuffed toy bows.

Then came one of the most uh, memorable bands of the night – Jenny Rocket! In the sense that they forgot to tune up before going on stage (major boo-boo) and that the vocalist was kicking and punching his band members on stage.

I think he was trying to get them into the mood to dance about in an indie band manner instead of mostly standing.

The way they sounded, I felt like I was temporarily teleported into a jamming studio!

Fortunately Auburn saved our ears with some new songs in the language of Malay.

Still as progressive and rocking as ever!

Maya Lara was next – this was Jenny Rocket without the vocalist.

Firasah ended the night with a killer cover of Deep Purple – Burn.

They were only allocated time for one song as the gig was over, so the vocals were cut off from the sound system for the next song, Iron Maiden – Trooper. That did not stop the crowd from singing the entire song (and the catchy call-and-response riff!)

Yep, some members of heavy metal revival guys Revenge were in the crowd. Fun night that was!

7-1

7th January 2009, Andrew Netto Live at No Black Tie with opening/closing act, The Ramanados!

Greg’s brother Herman takes over vocal duties due to poor Greg losing his voice.

And then it was time for the youngest standup comedian in Malaysia, Andrew Netto!

Full house at No Black Tie, as usual…

Gotta love his African impression.

The place was so packed, even the stairways filled up! And ironically even his dad doesn’t get a seat. (Obviously, he moved over to the stairs…)

Over here sir.

Having taken a look at the month’s calendar for a few entertainment establishments, I feel it’s honestly a rarity to have stand-up comedy night.

And now for some drums!

Greg tries a few bars. Gotta love their cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers – Havana Affair (which was a cover of The Ramones – Havana Affair…)

Stevie can do it too!

My Kermit failed.

Outside No Black Tie, everything was in color!

Processed using my How to make low-contrast black-and-white from digital color photos tutorial.

Playing Guitar Hero is choosing the devil!

Yes, that’s what Harian Metro says on the front cover. Full article here (thanks Silencers for the find!)

There is also a bit with a psychologist from UITM here. He does not mention anything about choosing the devil before playing.

I don’t know about devils, but this guy here could be a pirate. He’s playing Guitar Hero using a gamepad, instead of the original Guitar Hero controller guitar that comes with the game!

Or he could be a cheapskate, buying only the game, which is possible, but is no fun.

Tou simply can’t choose the devil. Unless you confuse King Diamond or Lars mlat for the devil. Lars is just a black metal dude, that’s all!

Ironically, the game lets you choose the God Of Rock but not a devil.

You also battle the devil in Guitar Hero 3 with Steve Ouimette – The Devil Went Down To Georgia (which is a devillishly hard song.) Funny thing is, Charlie Daniels, who wrote the song, says the devil very often wins in his blog. Which is quite… true, since it’s one of the two hardest songs in the game!

Speaking of which, here’s the original.
